this is why people say you have to set realistic targets. instead of getting up at 5am and setting drastic life changes as your goal why not just have the goal be go for a run after work? dont have to get up any earlier, havent already flaked out of it first thing in the morning. then set a target of doing that 3x a week. then after you are consistently doing that, start eating less junk food. no one has ever succeeded in doing everything all at once.

Fix your diet and sleep schedule first for a few months. When you feel better and more energised, go for it.

What causes new people to set up insane goals instead of realistic ones?

Just go one thing at a time nigga

The idea of instantly going from 0 to 100 I guess. Setting a slowly built up steady program requires lots of patience and daily discipline.

Bullshit and you will do. 5am is a great time to exercise. Gym and roads and parks are empty except for other serious people. You will get up and do that for twenty days straight and not fail to do it for any reason. You will do a simple workout. On the twenty first day, you will see no reason to stop. Slowly you will get bored with your workout and you will do something to add to it or whatever and you will form a habit and that will become your new normal. The key is to set a commitment in the beginning. You will doubt, you will think it is dumb, you will ask "why"? You will think it was a bad idea and not your way but you will do.

You can unironically just decide one day that you're going to get up every day at 5 and do something, though I wouldn't recommend running every morning. As long as you're eating right and getting enough sleep and sunlight, you'll have the energy to force yourself to do shit when you inevitably lose motivation. You just have to want it enough.

Personally, I can't do half-measures. I'm either in something 100% or not at all. So I can commit to going to the gym 3x per week or I can go 0x. There is no in between, because being lax with my expectations inevitably means I'll start being lazy and go less and less until I stop going entirely. Same thing applies to sleep and diet (not OP btw).

Won't ever work if you go 0 to 100 bro. Gotta make small steps, one change at a time.

it's not about motivation, it's about building discipline and habits, bit by bit

start by just eliminating/cutting back on one thing and set up a reward for yourself when you do(n't) do it, it can be as simple as just smiling to yourself for having done it successfully

then slowly over time increase these changes until you wake up one day a year later and notice you've basically changed your life

Yeah but it’s not going to become a habit so there’s no point. Congrats you went on a run at 6 am. You gonna do it again? Dont think so.
Sustainability is more important than going all out for a week. Fitness is a marathon not a sprint. You cant cheat your way into physical fitness you. You need time and repetition.

My point is you can start a habit by just doing it and forcing yourself to do it for a week or 2. I personally wouldn't recommend running every morning because I think running is overrated, but getting up early and going yo the gym first thing a couple times a week is not a bad idea. The most important thing is that if you promise yourself you're going to do something, you follow through no matter what.

You need to just pick one thing that requires genuine effort and stick to it more often than not and it will make discipline in general easier keep up. Either you should have started a year ago or started ten years ago, start doing shit now. Do you want to be a pathetic husk at 60 shuffling around like a fucking corpse or do you want to die a man?
