nah, it's like squat vs leg press or machine hack squat.the latter are better for pure hypertrophy because the lack of need for stabilization and coordination, the first teaches you stabilization and coordination which in turn enables you to apply that strength much more effectively in a wider variety of situations.if you are all show and no go, form over function, you'll never do a standing barbell strict press. if you are a gentleman and connoisseur, you do seated DB press and smith machine press to feed into bigger numbers for your standing barbell press.
>>76745498Most fags do it with bad form, but if you did a seated variation then it's foolproof compound movement for shoulder
>>76745514Good post
>>76745498>>76745498It's funny cause it's either dyels or absolute chads hitting it. I think intermediates are scared. But yes, if I see someone OHPing 70kg+ for reps you know they're strong. For me OHP is a lift that you do to prove strength, not necessarily build it.
>>76745498>Front Delt>Triceps>SerratusCovered by bench press>side DeltThey grow better from lateral raisesI wouldn't call them a meme. but they always seemed super redundant to me.
My problem with them is if you're already doing like 10+ sets of chest a week. your front delts are going to get huge.If you then add even more front delt volume from OHP. it's going to give you massively unbalanced shoulders.
>>76745528>>76745552It's even worse with barbell OHP. It only trains your front delts, barely lateral delts. At least if you do dumbbell shoulder press, you can have arms to the sides and it will train front and lateral deltoids at same time.Dumbbell = superior to barbell
>>76745579Trvthnvke, dumbbell is ultimate egotard filter.Seeing a guy doing anything with 50kg+ dumbbell is more impressive than powershitters.
>>76745498it's not a meme, but its a terrible choice if hypertrophy is your goal in lifting.its way too expensive in fatigue terms for the actual stimulus. mind the fatigue also effects your following exercises negatively
if you commit to it and give it the effort and focus it needs (you should be dedicating a day or two a week to it if you really want it to grow) then no, it will build big shouldersif you just dick around for 3x5 every now and then and wonder why you cant press more than 135, no, it wont do shit
>>76745552this is where it all falls apart. you're prioritizing bench work and wondering why pressing isn't give you the results you want.this modern obsession with building tits over huge shoulders just doesn't make sense, and no, benching will NEVER grow your shoulders like heavy pressing will. I benched 315 for reps with mediocre shoulders but in the past 6 months of focusing entirely on building my press up (currently 185 but a goal of 225) my shoulders have absolutely exploded
>>76745498What's your goal?OHP is a bad lift for almost everything. Even just to keep doing a vertical pressing movement, I prefer the push press.A good reason to do strict presses would be to improve your snatch or your jerk, they're good for that.
>>76745689>A CHEST compound will never grow your SHOULDERS like a SHOULDER compound>I started focusing on my SHOULDERS and my SHOULDERS got bigger. You're so fucking dumb.
>>76745730>OHP is a bad lift for almost everything. Even just to keep doing a vertical pressing movement, I prefer the push press. You prefer the one that is the same but removes most of the shoulders?
So what’s a better shoulder exercise?
>>76745852Lateral Raises and bent over lateral raises.
>>76745877Thanks
>>76745820It removes the worst parts of the force curve, but still stimulates the shoulders. If you want to save your shoulders a bit, you have to figure out how: either you change exercise like I did, or you do ohp but light, or you keep to a minimal number of sets. It's not like there are so many options.
>>76745778focusing chest is stupid, focus shoulders and do chest as a secondary activity is the point
>>76745498I like it because it's fun and easy to integrate with leg day since i can just start adding more weight once im done doing OHPDont think that hard about it
Yes, it's the same as barbell squats and deadlifts, a meme ego lift that will axially compress your spine and damage your discs if you do it with heavy enough weight enough times.
If you can't OHP lmao2koreangirls what even are your lifting goals?
>>76745689>benching will NEVER grow your shoulders like heavy pressing will.Benching can be heavy pressing, what the hell are you talking about. Just do side raises and reverse pec flys, shoulders solved
That gee video made me a man

>>76745852Dumbbell shoulder press with your arms to the sides.>>76745969If you do dumbbell press with one dumbbell, you will compress spine with only half weight.
>>76745969just do some dead hangs after
>>76746150Unilateral vertical push is retarded.
I OHP 180lbs x2 today for the first time. Was hoping for three reps. It's one of my favorite exercises.
>>76745927Incline bench + lateral raisesorOHP + ???>chest as a secondary activityWhat the fuck is a secondary chest activity? Dips? Pec Deck?any chest you add with OHP is going to give you oversized front delts.Even if your goal is massive shoulders OHP is inferior. You get way better stimulus with lateral raises. OHP is a purely functional/strength lift.
>>76746117a press is done standing, when someone says pressing they mean an OHPthat's why its called a bench press, to differentiate it from the press
>>76746171OHP + Lateral raises is GOATeddips are a critical support exercise for a big OHP anyways, so yes
>>76746150>If you do dumbbell press with one dumbbell, you will compress spine with only half weight. Why would you do them unilaterally? Best way is to do them seated with dumbbells, in my opinion.
>>76746376And you must always have back support, too risky otherwise.
>>76746393>too risky otherwise. Not sure if you're being ironic, but yeah. You're probably not snapping your ship in a catastrophic even by OHPing without back support, but you're most likely accumulating disc wear and tear
>>76745498no that'd be bench.
>>76746402Without back support, it becomes a very shitty core balancing exercise that might put you in a wheelchair, what's the point lol.
>>76745552Nothing on you is going to get "huge" unless you're blasting roids, be realistic. You're complaining about how you'll have too much money to spend when you get a mcwagie job.
>>76745590Like I care what impresses some autistic faggot on 4chan.
>>76745658you vastly overestimate the number of people capable of doing 3x5 with 135.
>>76746197>a press is done standing, when someone says pressing they mean an OHPThis is starting strength autism
>>76745527i think this is the best reasoning. i include ohp as my first exercise on one of the 4 workout days i have and i do it to test my progress. i have long since moved past the 5x5 i started with but i still love a few sets of five to measure my progress. did 75kg for three sets today, felt good to get closer to my all time high again
>>76746458Huge relative to your other muscles dipshit.
>>76746518pfft yeah I bet, huge fucking front delts from your 120 ohp lol.
>>76746539post bodynot him btw
>>76746163You are retarded.>>76746376>Why would you do them unilaterally? To put only half load on your spine. To buy only a single dumbbell.
>>76746585It's not half a load when shear force is applied, dumbfuck.
>>76746480the press (e.g., OHP) was an olympic lift before mark rippetoe was weaned off his mothers teat
/fit/ has fallen far, you are all a bunch of weak lazy dyel indian zoomersOHP is a chad movement, raising heavy weight above your head is alpha as fuckkeep lifting 15lb dumbbells for 20 reps, you are all a bunch of women now srs
>>76746136It's dey culcha
>>76745498These women are pushing 50 today
>>76745552>waaah my delts are too big!sad no natty ever
>>76746463Kek
>>76745498I would yes but heavily contextual. It's like front delts, rear delts and serratus. They will all grow to nearly their full extent without isolation because of how hard they get worked in a lot of other lifts... in most cases. In edge cases however they won't and will need isolation. How OHP fits into this is that there's very specific leverages and frames that need it. To do what's being left out and then isolating the medial delt so it keeps up with the front delt. But I would say for the majority of people that have Incline pushing and overhead pulling in their routine only medial delt needs extra work and maybe the rear delt if they have postural issues or imbalances between back and front. Work around your body mechanics nobody is a walking average.
i just like ohps thats all there is to it
Front deltoids are already too big from dips and push ups.
>>76745498>tfw miss this generation of life writing my lifts in a notebook and going to /hr to talk about SNSD and Tara I miss caring about the world.
OHP is not much useful since dips/bench/pushups already train front deltoids hard. You need to train rear and lateral deltoids.
OHP is useless.
>>76745498GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABYEEGEEGEEOHP is my favorite lift btw, I feel so fucking happy when it's OHP day.
>>76745498Standing one, yes.I was able to do 110 kg in a standing ohp, which just means I abused the shit out of the leg drive. In the sitting one it was like 60 kg, it took forever to get to an 80 kg sitting ohp, also my knees are now way better because of it.Sitting ohp is pure upper body strength, so way more impressive, you can't cheat up an ohp while sitting, there is no technique to push your number 20 to 30 kg higher than it actually is.
>>76745498>the only lift that matters>memeno one gives a shit about your deadlift.being able to lift grown ass niggas up over your head so you can break them makes you a god.
>>76749788lmao faggot what you describe is a push press and it's an entirely different exercise
>>76745498It’s the best lift, I used to love OHPing my gym partner. She would get so wet, you haven’t lived until you have pressed a girl above your head
>>76749788Try not using your legs while standing maybe?
>>76745498There's no better feeling that ohping someones squat/deadlift in the rack next to them. Barbell ohp ftw.
>>76749788>remove axial strength development because you cant stop cheating yourselfsad, but at least you addressed your failings in a round about way
>>76745517>exercise becomes easier when you remove load from muscle groupsWoahSeated press is not ohp. If you’re getting filtered by standing you need a stronger upper middle back
