Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.

Eat a lot of protein. 1g per lb of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and burn fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body burning away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.

i'd say go ahead and go to failure again if you aren't sore but others would say you should let your muscles rest and focus on different muscles the next day for maximum gains. if you're new, you're going to get gains no matter what you do as long as it's consistent. keep it up. you'll notice improvements in your physique in just a few weeks. in a few months, other people will start to notice and make comments on it.

12 reps is the max. not 12 reps and done but you should suffer to get the 12th rep and if you can do more you need to increase the weight.
when you lift, you should feel the target muscles contracting. if you can't, lower the weight until you can. the lift isn't to get the weight from point A to point B but to feel the muscle squeeze.
take 6 seconds to do each rep to feel and focus on the contraction.
i'm telling you all this because i discovered i have no mind-muscle connection with my front delt when i stalled at 55lbs dumbbell overhead press for 2 years.
i can do 20lbs strict side raise for reps but can barely do 3 reps of front raise with 10lbs.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Even ordering fast food slop multiple times a day and still felt awful, despite how nice tasting the food was. My heaviest was "only" 105kg though before I snapped out of it.
