They suck because they dont have any carry over.

I can just do Dumbbell Presses and my Barbell Bench press will maintain

I can just do Weighted Dips and my Dumbbell Presses will maintain

I can just do Squats and my Deadlift will maintain

For example I can squat 200kg for 5, and just by simply doing that I can still deadlift 240kg+ without ever touching deadlifts for months and months, a Leg Press will never maintain my deadlift like a squat will....

This is the key reason why being a machine bro is feels like a waste of time, even if you build muscle doing it, there's no carry over to any free weight lifts, it doesn't help keep your strength up for any movements that require actual strength

I like the thought of all I need to get/be/maintaing fitness is a barbell and running. Machines are the devil, poisoned apple, etc. "what can this be used for vs. what is the cost of its use?"

this is wrong once you hit high levels of strength. Find me one 400kg+ deadlifter who doesn't use the leg press.

Strength in technical lifts is mostly skill involving muscle already have.
Same deal with all these construction/tradie memes. The body just learns the most effecient recruitment pattern to do a specific thing. How you ideally want to build muscle is diffent from that. You can easily train both aspects but the nuance and specificity is differnt. Hell you don't even have to go anywhere near failure on heavy lifts to get really strong in them but you do have to practice them a lot. Hypertrophy is diffent in that you don't have to do it as often but you do have to go failure and you want it to be as targeted as possible.

yeah machines build unaesthetic bulky muscle while my heckin wholesome barbells build toned functional strength muscle. especially if you do 7 sets and throw in some accessory lifts so you can milk the deep stretch and get microtears so your toned aesthetic functional muscle grows back bigger. Also gotta dirty bulk.

No shit machines aren't gonna be as good if you're interested in doing free weight movements too. But people use machines for hypertrophy purposes. Not powershitter purposes. It depends on your goals and there's nothing wrong with doing either.

either way, it's probably fine to have a mix of machines and free weights depending on your goals and enjoyment. I would never do preacher curls with a machine that has a shitty resistance profile over just using an ez bar. I enjoy pressing with dumbbells and a barbell over machines. I train my shoulders pretty much exclusively with a machine shoulder press and cable lat raises. My back with pulldowns and chest-supported machine rows. My legs with hack squats, curls, extensions and barbell SLDLs. Sometimes I switch to db shoulder pressing if I feel like it.

Also I think this "strength carry-over" thing is kinda overblown desu. When I started lifting, I couldn't do a single pull-up. When I eventually worked my way up to my bodyweight on lat pulldowns, i was able to do pull-ups just fine.

Don't go into extremes where you're a caveman powershitter, but also don't go into some science-based tiktok extreme of screaming that db/bb compounds won't make you big and you need to do single joint keenan flaps or whatever. Do what you enjoy in line with your goals.
