Sup /fit/! I'm a young guy. Been working out at home (pull/push/chin/sit) ups. Thinking about going to the gym. But I've never been in a gym before. Don't have any friends who go to the gym either. How should I prepare? Do I need any gear? What kind of clothes should I wear? Share any other stuff you think might help me.

Be sure to wear a button-up shirt and at least jeans when going in. You don’t want to roll up in your gym clothes, unless you’re in a gym in a very bad neighborhood. They are also going to be mad at you if you don’t bring a towel, or even a very small one: you’ll want to bring a big beach towel to cover the ENTIRE bench, so it won’t get gross from your sweat.

When it comes to gym attire, consider a tank top: the most experienced, buff guys are wearing stringy tank tops, so you’ll fit in with the guys who know what they’re doing. Shorts are whatever, I prefer shorter ones because you can see your quads develop better (think about the stuff MMA fighters wear). Try to find sturdy boots with ankle support and preferably metal toe boxes. This protects your toes from dropped weights, as well as supporting your ankles (they might have to carry 2x the weight they’re used to).
