My marriage improved tremendously when I accepted that the woman I married was basically an evil clone who had killed and replaced my girlfriend (metaphorically, for you autists). That's why I mentioned a prenup you buffoon. A well structured prenup protects your assets from BEFORE marriage. What you own that is co-mingled, acquired while together, or earned while together is split.

Easy example: I have $100k in assorted investments before marriage. I have a house with $100k left on the mortgage. I get married, divorced 5 years later. During that 5 years we have $100k in a different brokerage account and various bank accounts. We sell the house, pay off mortgage. She and I split the proceeds from the house less the remaining mortgage. We split the new $100k in investments/cash accounts. My original $100k of investments is still mine, plus any growth, as long as I didn't continue to contribute to it during the marriage.

When I lost my job and started making dogshit money doing freelance stuff, and the money wasn't working out, I was panicking like fuck. Debt rising in my name. Etc.
Then I woke up and realized how much of a fucking psycho my wife was and that the divorce would easily result in about 0 alimony. But she came in, with my phone, and recorded video of herself laughing at me while I was curled up. Made me realize the woman I'd been sacrificing my health and sanity for didn't love me.
