>Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

meine gotte

did 92 miles maybe more this week

fink most ever

remember last time i did 90 i fink was fairly new to doing.longer stuff and ii was exhausted by end

but this.time i feel alri albeit will be doing couple easy days now

but last time was mostly just easier stuff

diss time its mental coz had a 5 mile easy day and speed interval sess and like a few days with tempo work

and i stillnmade 92.and feel better than last time. just shows the improvement gone from doing the long distances and acclimatistion of the body to high mileage

absolutely.

bloody mental

propa phwoarin aint i

the days were summat like

14
21
16
14
5
7
15

15 today

and whats weird i actally felt quite fresh coz of the 5 and even though 5 included tempo and track

but fing is even.when i do hard workouts i feel more rested after because the mileage on the day is relatively very low

since doing lots of long distance runs my body is very much like used to doing 12-14 miles and.not really feeling tired umless.i.upgrade it to include tempo efforts

actually fink i touched tempi pace on 4 of the days. today included coz felt fresh but had hard styff yesterday too

anticipT will feel slovenly tomorrow so next 2 days defo garn.be like 5-6 mile short runs
>>
woops meant 7 included tempo and interval

i lie that wasnt even tempo i did that day it was more like maybe 10k pace with some faster bits some slower bits, basicallt all out over 4.miles to the extent i can on streets whoch is really impossible coz you have to stop for corners and i have like sustained incline on one bit which just kills the speed

and then did the 15 intervals straight afta
>>
may have only been 3 tempo days nit sure. trying to work out if i did on day 1. that would make 4. cant rember. i fink i did because i feel like i rember anticipating the 21 miler would be rough because not fully rested from day before but dunno

Is it stupid to recommend a max cushion neutral trainer as a first shoe to a c25k enjoyer? I read the reviews and those made pretty stiff and stable these days
>>
>>76851514
There’s lots of debate around heel striking/fore foot striking that people will swear was is right and one is wrong. but the bigger factor seems to be over-striding while landing which leads to more injuries. I think the max cushion shoes tend to make new runners more comfortable with heel striking and that heel striking is more susceptible to over striding. Nothing inherently wrong with max cushion, just watch your form.
Another thing to look at is the “drop” on the shoe. That’s the difference in height between the toe and heel. Max cushion also tends to be higher drop which also tends to lead to heel striking. But you can find low/zero drop max cushion.
>>
>>76851514
i got the asics gel kayano 32 or whatever they're up to. they're very well cushioned. they're for mid-foot strikers. They're horrible to walk in due to the cushioning but great for running. they're very stable. they're typically recommended for fatter/ heavier cunts. I rate them.
t. only been rooning about a year
>>
>>76851514
>>76851764
i started with brooks ghosts (wore them for years as general purpose/ walking shoes), they're good vanilla but didn't have enough padding for when i first started trooning outside. I then got brooks glycerin GTS, but didn't like them. Both of them are for heel strikers, which I finally worked out I am not. Once I swapped to a mid strike friendly shoe everything felt better.

NTA anon but I'm not gonna buy cheap stuff. A bit of enjoyment of the sport, for both cycling and running is having nice gear. I'm a short and staggeringly ugly and hate the way I look. I refuse to buy nice clothes for myself because who tf am I gonna show off to? When I'm out riding or running though that all changes. I can look down, or in the mirror and think to myself "yeah I look good, I like the way I look" and that gear is the ONLY clothing that gives me that feeling, even when I've had to dress up nice for events is the same feeling of disgust. So I'll spend the extra money to get nice stuff, so I can feel good about myself for however brief that is.

What ever happened with the bare foot running craze and all those five finger and super minimalist shoes? They were huge what like 5-10 years ago and now it seems to have died out.
>>
I enjoy rooning but I think being overweight is causing issues, especially with my knees. I have really thick running shoes, I make sure my form is good but my knees get sore after I run, I think it must be that I'm at least 15-20lbs overweight. Even if I take a break for weeks, the soreness comes back after one short run

I don't know, is that why I'm having issues?
>>
>>76854413
it wasn’t the cure all it was sold as. A lot of the benefits oversold and a lot of the negatives undersold. (The born to run book still a decent read though). That said, zero-drop and minimalist shoes have their market. And I think more people are moving towards shoe rotations that include lower drop/minimalist shoes
>>
>>76854413
Almost all got injuries after buying into the lie that was Born to Run. McDougall, just like most such as Dr. Cucuzzella, don't take major variables into account like the fact that the Tarahumara have certain adaptations from the start due to their genetics that enable them to run well without injuries in minimalist footwear. It encourages forefoot striking, which has a much higher injury rate than even heel striking because it causes a lot more stress on muscles like the tibias. The adaptations you get from this can be good as it can support your stride, but it's something you add in sparingly.
>>
>>76854413

This soreness gets less and less the more I exercise, like DOMS e.g., I went on a holiday and didn't roon or do anything for 3 weeks. I started exercising again 3 weeks ago and only now has the soreness and DOMS and whatnot associated with starting again settled down. I swim and I'm thin but overall my body is untrained.
>>
>>76854683
The idea is that the best way to get better at running is run more. And running slower allows your body to recover faster and run more miles. In zone 2 you can work your aerobic base which is a big part of running.
I do agree though people have become too spastic about it and for most people starting out just running is the best. Just run at a pace that you aren’t immediately out of breath and occasionally mix in some faster pace and running up hill and you are golden.

I did lots of shin stretching and calf raises (bodyweight) and also heel walks back and forward to failure pretty much every day for a while and the shin splints went away. another one was also making sure my cadence is decent >170. When i first started I was bouncing along stomp stomp smashing my shins. but like every cunt says over and over, start off slow and start off with short distances and only increase by a small amount each week. c25k goes alright. the halhigdon in the preamble has some good ones too.

Here's the facts, anon:
>volume trumps intensity
>distance events rely more on your aerobic system than your anaerobic system
>zone 1-2 develops your aerobic system the best
>it's better to do a lot of easy runs that allows you to not only get volume, but also build your aerobic system
However, you just started running. Don't worry about the zone shit. Infact, I'll tell you to not worry at all if you are not doing long (2hr+) runs. Just learn to pace better so your pace is consistent throughout your run (with few exceptions like hills.) Once you start doing 4 runs a week with one of them being 2 hours or more, then worry about zone shit because you are very likely doing distance events or doing an activity like boxing that requires a big aerobic base.

Now, that's not to say intensity is not important. It is. I will tell you, even if you are low volume, to do some harder intensity. There's a way to do it while on lower mileage. They're called fartleks. When you are able to do 30minutes straight with a consistent pace, add them in during one run per week.
>>
>>76854866
>fartlek
i just started doing the braaplek session. they're pretty pretty fun.

the only meme is that this is a new breakthrough in training methods. it has always been the way to train for distance running and always will be. every non retarded program will have the bulk of the running made up of easy runs and a long run. the difference in training programs comes from the interval sessions which remains open for debate. obviously threshold is the flavour of the month at the minute.
>>
>>76854737
Why would you not do your strength training? Stop looking for shortcuts. Don't think of it as something extra that you have to do. It is an integral part of the training plan not an addition to it.

Those ankle-foot-lower leg routines are excruciatingly boring. You spend 40min 3x/week doing gay little exercises that don't feel like you have achieved anything or exerted any effort. I tried them for a month. The result, same as before. Maybe I underestimated how taxing running is and how far behind being sedentary has set me, but still I expected better.

For people with a wide midfoot these were a god send.

I ran in five fingers a lot like 15 years ago. Later I ran in the saucony kinvara a lot, back when it had minimal drop.

Sadly it’s hard to find minimal drop shoe with a wide midfoot (not just wide at the toes). I ordered/returned 15 pairs of shoes a couple weeks ago looking for a minimal drop that’s wide in the midfoot. Doesn’t exist anymore.

Considering getting the five fingers back in rotation. Though last time had some nasty cuts/blisters in areas where the seams were.

Depends how much you're running and how hard the hard days are. If you're doing 4 or 5 runs per week I'd still do at least one of them easy. 3 runs then I probably wouldn't bother with an easy run unless you feel like it's needed.

6 months in finally reached my first major PR goal, sub 30 5k. And that's a solid sub 30 too, zone 2/3 injury free. After that finished up another ~5k for a solid 10k, idk how close i am to sub 60 10k, I lost track of laps.

first 3 months progress was great, the last 3 months sucked my ass, juggling cardio progress, recovering from injuries (knee, then shin splints), strengthening, correcting form, adapting to pavement instead of gravel, trying to put on muscle and lose weight, etc.

190 5'10" so still a good 15lbs of fat to lose minimum. Plenty of muscle to put on too. Just so relieved I'm basically injury free now and can put in an hour run easy. with that PR I'm already in the best shape of my life and the next 6 months are gonna be smooth sailing. I like winter running but damn can't wait for spring and summer. And next fall actually.

anons I'm (21M) looking to run my first 5K race since high school in May and want to hit a sub-20 as a super ambitious dream goal for myself. I started running again early October and I'm just now getting to an 11:00/mi easy pace for ~20-25mpw. I also strength train (maintenance now after lifting a lot in college, so not too intense) and do yoga. I've pretty much only been doing easy runs with a longer run on Sundays, but idk how long it should be before I add speedwork. Is my goal time feasible? Am I training properly?
>>
>been rooning almost 2 weeks now
>just set PR for 1 mile (9:10)

I guess the saying in cycling "It never gets easier you just go faster" also applies to running. I can't wait to be able to do 5k without my heart screaming.
>>
>>76860388
6 months is so much time. You can make massive gains. I would not wait that long to race. It's only a 5k, I'd do one soon enough to see where you're at. Doesn't have to be a proper race just smash a 5k in training and see what you can do. Then you will have a better idea of what paces to run on your speedwork and tempo runs.
>>
>>76860577
It absolutely gets easier. But you gotta get fit first. 2 weeks is nothing. Long way to go but it's worth it. Just keep the consistency. Don't be trying to run a PR every week.

Tendon injuries heal fastest when bloodflow gets to them (blood carries the good healing shit). Thing is, staying stationary gets them almost no blood. That's why PT exercises often involve stimulation of the area, stretching, or a lesser version of the main exercise (eg. unweighted heel squats) themselves.

So yeah you risk snapping your shit up but you got lucky
>>
>>76862237
the one on the vo2max page itself is just based on general statistics. The insights thing is only for people that have insights enabled and also have a running (can be calculated from walking activity too though) vo2max at all, so it's skewed towards higher performing people, I just don't know by how much, because as you say these people run like 5km per week or some shit. Guess not everyone logs every single run they do.

hat and gloves if it's a bit colder
wind proof jacket if it's freezing
I have a pair of tights but rarely wear them. Legs always feel ok once you get moving.
goretex shoes are waterproof and warm.

have a waterproof jacket but hate wearing it.

Did 16km/10 miles today. Longest so far, a bit less than 2 hours.
Discovered the path I wanted to take and that looked good on google map was closed by random ass construction work 6km in, it's a tiny road between two villages so there was no other reasonable path.
And as I went back to just run on the same segment between my town and the first village several times, I found out this village I keep running through is going to get a shitload of roadwork too. rip good spot. All the other paths fucking suck even when it's dry (because they're fucking cobblestone paths, or just weirdly very used tiny roads with no space on the sides) let alone in winter now it's wet and muddy all the time or are just big roads, so fucking annoying.

Thanks, any specific item recommendations? I have gift cards at REI and figure might as well spend them now. Last year I was injured during the winter and only did occasional treadmill runs to see if it still hurt. This year I'm feeling better, but what I have isn't really sufficient...

I just buy whatever is on sale so have a big mix of every brand. They're all basically the same I think. Just avoid the cheap shit. Like if Lidl or Aldi are doing running gear it's usually absolute junk.

long sleeve shirt that is tight + thicker tshirt over it is absolutely kino.
was rooning this setup at -1°C and had no issues

make it shirt + longsleeve + shirt for even colder or more comfy temps
>>
>>76866029
>shirt + longsleeve + shirt
at that stage just buy warmer clothes. no way that is comfortable compared to a nice jacket

I've been running for about 2 weeks and been using the Ghost 17s. I don't really care for them, I really liked the Ghost 14s when I ran sporadically a few years back but the 17s just aren't seeming to do it. Maybe I just need to keep running. I picked up a pair of Novablast 5 to try out since it'll be nice to have 2 pairs of shoes anyway. Any of you anons use the NB5 or maybe both?
>>
I'm also getting all my cold weather gear soon and wanted to test it out but it's supposed to snow. I've never ran in the snow any tips? It shouldn't be anything crazy.

>middle distance training
how do you train for this? i wanna get a good 2km time because conscription selection is coming up, but i dont really know how to train. I can do 1.6 km in 7:20 minutes, but i'm completely gassed at the end. I only really did long distance running and at that point it's just a matter of pushing yourself just a bit more, but i feel like i need a different approach for this. Should i try to keep this pace and glue a bit more distance on it, or go for a 2km and try to speed up more and more every time?

Note that selection criteria for conscription are shockingly lenient (cut off is 2000 meter in 12 minutes or so) so it's not really that important but i dont just want to scrape by.
>>
>>76868405
Run for time. Go easy don't worry about the pace. Build up to 30 minute runs a few times per week.
Then start working on your target pace for the 2k. I would go for sub 8 minutes, so 4:00 per km. You are not a million miles away from that and the longer runs will help you get there. Do intervals at 4min pace or a bit faster.
for example 10x400m or 6x600m with about 90 seconds recovery. nothing fancy but it will get you fit enough
>>
>>76868433
thanks senpai
Got any good program for interval training?
>>
>>76868516
literally just do a full retard sprint for like 500 meters or so at the end of your run when you feel like it. Do more of these sprints with some cooldowns in between if you can't get the nauseous maxhr feeling (which must chase) anymore.

>>
>>76868516
There's a million different sessions you could do. I'd aim for 4k total distance. Anything that adds up to that. 10x400, 4x1000 or mix the distances up something like 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 400 would be a nice workout. Try a few different ones and get a feel for the pace you can handle and what recovery time you need.

Hello guys. You may have missed my exciting reports in the recent months. Previously I had gone to run something like 5 times but I haven't posted since then. One reason for that is even I realise my posts are not that interesting, I did go for a few runs, but I've been mostly doing callisthenics instead as my exercise in the great outdoors. Today I gave running another go.
I already regretted doing it when I had trouble getting off the tram, cornered by homeless and had to tap the guy in front of me on the shoulder because he couldn't hear me. Then usual walk to park, run was nothing special, 3 laps in 10 minutes, 5-10 minute rest, 2 more laps in 7 minutes. Bit of sun but cold. Drinking fountains in the park didn't work, maybe because it's freezing. Walk back then a few pullups.
Might be my last time for a while, winter is coming, but also I'm trying to lose weight and I'm thinking of not doing any exercise because I think it fucks up my metabolism, even if just because I eat before it to have energy and after to replenish.
I've been feeling more shit than usual recently and I think it's after eating carbs. So I measured my blood sugar after I got home, didn't eat anything, it was 7.5 mmol/l. Weird because it's never been that high even when I'm feeling shit, and I wasn't even feeling that shit this time. Is it because I wasn't drinking and my blood got thicker, or is it normal for it to go up from exercise? Supposedly you can't even feel your blood sugar level. So why am I feeling shit then?

I have Ghosts for walking and Novablasts for running and they're bretty perfect.

Anybody know where a bro can get Novablasts for $100 or less? $250 for 2 at Asics is the cheapest I see anywhere.

> regardless if you ran the whole time or not
It's ok to not get it on your first try. It's not ok to use dishonest language like saying that you "did" a Marathon when you didn't run it. I "do" a Marathon in my car twice a day.

not with that attitude

I started this year at 29. Definitely seeing improvement and these are just some random runs I picked. HR is lower, pace is faster, distance is higher. I am probably not training efficiently and I only do like 20k per week.

>>76868778
as this pic shows, you have like 2 decades in which you're not decaying yet. maybe you don't get better as fast as a 15 year old but you can definitely get better. Anyone would probably get significantly faster from weight loss alone.

I got like 2kg heavier btw so my gains are muscle or technique.
>>
>Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).
I literally just want to do long easy runs with no plan forever though

>>
>>76869391
Cannot wait to see the many completely burnt out using this method.
>>
>>76870196
Gait analysis is a meme. They have you run on a treadmill. One of the problems with a treadmill is that it can change your natural running style. Personal example: my main style is midfoot strike, while I'm a forefoot striker on the treadmill. During that, my heel doesn't touch the ground at all. It's just an unconscious thing fir me to do, as I can tell myself to not do it, but I zone out while doing it.

If they're doing the gait analysis outside, fine since it's the natural environment that you will be running in.

Afa shoes: just wear whatever is comfortable.

I hate your sport, but I have worked very hard to learn how to run as part of being a functional human. No shade, just not my thing.

I was late for my meeting and started jogging there. It was only 1.7 km/1.0 miles. First time in my life that I was limited my pace because of not wanting to sweat rather than being out of breath. It felt really fucking good especially since it was -5C/23F.
