He needs to figure out how to use body language to signal confidence. In the picture on the right, for instance, standing upright rather than leaning back would probably make him look more confident. Portraits are pretty good ways to get a feel for this, since they were designed to signal status and personality. Picrel isn't the best example, but it has an educated/bookish feel similar to OP while having better posture.

Getting more /fit/ helps, but what he needs is an aesthetic vision, and that's more of an /fa/ question.
