This thread is bait, but I'll bite. I think the difference between gym strength and muscle strength is the degree to which you are comfortable applying force in weird positions. Most gym lifters will develop strength through a few ranges but rarely bother with anything, say, outside a neutral spine position, or involving lateral bending or twisting. Lifting "real" objects like big rocks, couches, heavy equipment, or packed boxes requires you to move through further ranges than you will expose yourself to if all you ever do is the big 3 barbell lifts plus accessories.
Of course this can be fixed by just working through said ranges, even every once in a while, and developing an actually resilient body (not doing meme "bulletproofing" shit like unweighted bird dogs).
