Arnie's GVT is a meme, you literally get more results if you do half the sets he recommends. The authors of the paper probably didn't realise that you need to be pinning to do GVT properly.

The authors found it more beneficial to do 5 sets of 10 reps @ 60-80% 1RM, rather than 10 sets. They discuss how the test subjects probably faired better without overtraining.
