You should do whatever you want. It's really not that big a deal. You can make all freeweights, all machines, or a combination of both work just fine. Some may be better than other but it is completely secondary to consistency and effort over a long period of time.

No you can use machines. He is right in some sense though. There is a certain look you get from only doing machines. Typically the guys have small necks and it just doesn't look as good as a body built with more free weights IMO

After many years of training, I can safely say that if I had my time again and had to go for one or the other I would train with machines. You probably should do both but the aversion to machines doesn’t make any sense unless you want to be a weightlifter. If you just want to look good and have a decent amount of strength then the machines will be fine>pendulum/leverage/hack squat>leg press>leg curls>leg extensions>high rows>preacher curl>u arm pull downs>various grips of cable rows>chest and shoulder presses>deck, crossovers, face pulls, raises, pull downs etc etc You could build a great physique with that and never go near a free weight.
