I've tried getting advice on what I should do next and I'm getting next to no consistency in advice. Getting anything from people telling me I look great and should just slowly build more muscle to being told I'm overweight and need to cut for another year. I don't wanna do something stupid in either direction and waste time.

I'm 5 foot 9, 161 pounds in this photo, I was a casual lifter for the last few years after my doctor told me I was severely underweight at 130 pounds so I worked my way up to 170 pounds as of 8 weeks ago. I've gotten more hardcore about diet (eating about 1900 calories and 190g of protein) and progressive overload the last 7 weeks. Dropped 9 pounds, I'm lifting significantly heavier and I'm walking more. I definitely think I have more gas in the tank to cut and maintain strength so I'm not looking for an out on the cut but I want to make sure I optimally balance cutting fat with switching to gaining muscle now that I've gotten my shit together on lifting intensely and eating correctly.

it's your life, man, the fact that you're getting varying advice means you can do either. would you rather wake up tomorrow @ 180 with more LBM and more fat, or would you rather wake up 145 with visible abs?

normally i'd probably bulk, 5'9" 160 isn't a whole lot and i'd personally rather have a little extra temporary chub than be super lean but also look like i'd blow away in the wind. your beard will help mitigate the facial downsides to not being lean in the meanwhile. however, if you're lifting heavier despite losing 1 lb/week, why not just continue cutting until that runs out, and then start bulking?

p.s. work on your posture, i can tell from those fat lines and rounded shoulders that you spend way too much time slouched

yeah my default is to continue cutting and lifting heavy until I'm miserable and I'm not there yet.

the main reason I'm trying to get clarification is that the advice hasn't been helpful. On one extreme, the cutting advice has been people telling me I'm fat and that I need to lose another 20 pounds which seems extreme and on the bulking extreme it's been people telling me that I look really good and that I should lean bulk. your advice has been the most constructive so far.

You should absolutely be cutting and focus abs for a few weeks. You could be a lean god.
I am biased since I want to twink myself but you have a ton of fat to lose if you just do chicken/rice on the cut and maybe fast 14 hrs for a couple weeks.

If I were to compare, I started with your build but 5'7 and less muscle. 2 weeks with a no nonsense calorie deficit +fast and basic baby planks, side planks, and sitting crunches type shit I am happier with my core than ever in my life. Based on your height the same would probably be a month long endeavor.

Not sure your end goal but taking a pit stop in ab land for a few weeks and cutting hard can be a big motivator for your next goal

Btw there are upper body workouts that can reduce those mantits. If I were you I would mix those into a deep cut and tons of abs.

I don't have an end goal of being massive necessarily but I do want to put on more muscle. that being said, if the pit stop to that is to cut intensely, get good abs and nice and lean I'm happy to put in the effort, I'm just looking for a roadmap to how long that might be.
