How did this cult even become a thing? Across 4chan and reddit people were told to do a routine that prioritizes low bar squats 3x a week, gaining needless weight, drinking a gallon of milk a day, no curls, pullups, that arms should be neglected over the superior low-bar fat sit. Cardio kills gains and that being lean and having abs for homosexuals and people who are weak.

If you questioned or argued against any of this, you were met with endless barrages of sweaty nerds saying "YNDTP" and gaslighted into being told that SS is the be-all and end-al of fitness. To this day, people still bag-hold this mentality and are in the cult.

>SS
>STARTING STRENGTH
>not moving on to other routines once you are no longer weak
The whole point of starting strength is to get a skinny weak dyel who's never picked up anything heavier than thier own micropeen to gain some mass and train well enough to move onto a better split. People just get retarded about it.
>>
>>77142272
Because people here are contrarian and viciously stubborn. Maybe it has something to do with autism or 21st century cults of sub-cultural identity, you can almost never have a proper argument or discussions with someone once the "im team A you're team B" schism is established.
You can see this with diet discourse here too, suggesting that certain plants people swear by might be bad for you makes you a "ketoschizo", suggesting that certain kinds of meat might not be optimal makes you a "vegan" automatically. For a place where people love to whine about "normalfaggots" being cattle, it sure is full of cultist cattle.
>>
>>77142272
Just say you were too retarded to do SS

How many times is op going to make the same thread? Is this a kekke spam?

I started lifting as a lanklet and never once did SS or 5x5. I went immediately into 4 - 5 x 6 - 16 and got jacked really fast.

/fit/ between like 2010 and 2014 was one of the greatest things I have ever experienced on the internet. The humour, the characters like zyzz, scooby, tinytrip, the creativity of anons like SIR, but also the incredibly valuable insights of people who really, REALLY knew their shit. There were some genuine geniuses and wizards on there.

Unfortunately, it was also home to some of the most destructive broscience that still affects anons and fitness culture to this day. GOMAD and SS are kind of a meme nowadays, but there are still some leftovers of other shit like aromatase inhibition, leangains, crossfit, etc.
>>
>>77142272
I would get in between their legs and jiggle their thighs while they recover from leg DOMS. As a joke, haha.
>>
>>77142272
This image board memed it. You can blame rippits all you want, but in the end it was Jeffery Epstien and everyone responsible for 4chan itself
>>
>>77142609
It was a special place, that's for sure. Everything seems to have fizzled out, and I guess there's only so much you can talk about with fitness. It's basically solved.
>>
>>77142272
there was this absolute faggy obsession with lifting for the "right" reasons and not for the "wrong" reasons like just looking good in the mirror
in 2012 a newbie would go to r/Fitness asking for advice on how to lose weight and look better naked, and the faggots on those subs would berate the newbie for wanting to get fit for such a "vain" reason and that fitness should be reserved for pure functionality
the newbie, cowed like pic related then just goes along with whatever advice they gave to make the downvotes stop which was inevitability Starting Strength
it wasn't until enough people got fucked by it that they started shouting down the "functional fitness" fags and it went away
>>
>>77142288
That’s retarded though
You may aswell just start with PPL
>>
You have severely misunderstood the program.

>year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth 2026
>/fit/ still baffled by the fact that SS is not a bodybuilding routine
I think Rip's an insufferable twat, but he never claimed to give a fuck about "aesthetics", cardio conditioning, mobility, turning people into competitive powerlifters or whatever else you faggots are surprised that SS isn't about. It's supposed to develop STARTING STRENGTH in a general population shmuck as quickly as humanly possible (hence GOMAD if you happen to be an underweight twink) for as long as linear progression is possible, after which you can do something else with your life.
>>
>>77144343
>after which you can do something else with your life
such as getting railed by chad in your thick bubbly butt
>>
>>77144058
don't pin it on reddit, /fit/ and bb.com were doing the exact same shit. granted, on /fit/ it was more about dick sizing exaggerated PL totals and calling said newbie a DYEL skelly, but most of us retards just genuinely believed it was the ideal starting point for someone who wanted to get jacked and fuck women, because that's what we were told
>>

I'd rather work from a leg disadvantage

I made sick gains on SS+GOMAD, later I did 3day TM and got to 1/2/3/3. Now I am doing triathlon and lifting, all on vegan diet, never been fitter.

Mark rippetoe obviously knows what's up he's both huge and strong
>>

I started lifting and browsing /fit/ in 2019 and shilling for SS and GOMAD was still common, at least in sort of a meme way.
I never fell for it, but I did end up drinking a litre of milk everyday for next couple of years making me kinda fat, like 22% bf at most though

I smelled a rat when I asked why SS had zero compound arm exercises and no one could give me a real answer. push on it enough and people would parrot St. Rippetoe and talk about how "useless" doing arms was and then you'd know SS could be disregarded
a lot of people could have been saved if they went with 5/3/1 with BoringButBig instead of SS
>>
>>77142272
You can train without eating and you will be strong and lean.
>>
/fit/ was basically a fat acceptance place for a good decade. Probably more. They just couched the fat acceptance into terms like "bulking." It's all going away, fortunately.

531 and BBB don't include any arm work by default, and for a beginner would progress way too slow. SS is fine for 3-6 months until you plateau, and most will just curl or do chinups after doing their lifts anyway. Ironically, weighted chinups ARE part of SS, though it's fair to say they are not at all emphasized. The people in OP's pic are not used to how slow muscles build and want to look jacked immediately, the issue is not SS.
>>
>>77145516
5/3/1 literally has OHP and bench as two of the core 4 lifts tf are you talking about
Starting Strength is so fucking gay because Rippetoe himself tried discounting doing bench press and wanted it removed from the program in favor of ONLY doing squats/deads
>>
>>77145537
By arm work most people mean curls or chinups etc, stuff that DIRECTLY works biceps. Rip is hilarious and shouldn't be taken seriously, but SS has OHP and bench too. The program is fine for noobs who need to take advantage of noob gains. It's not the only way to get strong, the most well rounded way to get strong, and definitely not good diet advice, but it's fine for a foundation.
>>
>>77145482
this was such a well-known thing that YouTubers like Casually Explained were actively making fun of the whole "powerlifting = cope for being fat" thing
>>
>>77145537
so does SS??? the 4 lifts in every phase of SS are squat, bench, dl, OHP

I don't know why it took off either. I went to a very poor rural high school in oklahoma and we were doing a modified and improved version of the Nebraska college football strength and conditioning program (Husker Power). If I was exposed to such a god tier program being where I was from and everything its just nuts that the nerds of the internet in 2012 couldn't get their hands on superior programs to fucking SS.
>>
>>77145596
>curls or chinups

Both of those are mentioned as possible additions after a couple months learning the base lifts by rippletits himself...

>How did this cult even become a thing?
Because nerds on the internet resented aesthetic focused lifting and what it represented, but secretly wanted what it provided. SS/SL style programs had a focus on strength which allowed nerds to claim that they were focused on the objective benefits (ie arguing that strength training was functional while bodybuilding was not).

Also SS/SL style training does not require you to be in touch with your body. The gains are obvious and immediate (on paper) with a linear strength program, but trying to build an aesthetic body is a much slower process (with more variables).

Also most people are fucking lazy, it's easy to throw 5 lbs on your 5x5 program every session. It's the same reason most people just end up as early intermediates forever - they hit a point where they can't just increase the weight and spin their wheels because they're too lazy/stupid to fix their diet, understand periodization, train accessories, etc.

Back in 2011 or whatever everyone was mirin zyzz but for some reason did 5x5 squats 3 times a week. Did zyzz look like he did that shit?
>>
>>77146010
But SS/SL can give you nice body if you don't eat like a pig just from systemic stimulation of muscles activation.
>>
>>77146019
yeah people don't realize that arnold built his biceps just from holding the barbell during squats
>>
>>77146055
>arnold

The guy who on record started out doing olympic/strongman style lifting before making the transition to bodybuilding...I'm not sure this is the argument you think it is
>>
>>77146078
I guarantee that arnold was doing direct bicep/tricep work before transitioning to bodybuilding. During the peak of SS/SL people were legitimately claiming that your arms would grow from holding the barbell during heavy squats. You're not growing impressive arms on 5x5 alone. Pretty sure rip said people should be throwing in some direct arm work after their main lifts, but most people didn't read the book, they just followed some PDF or excel spreadsheet.

Based Nebraska lifting program
>>
>>77146122
What about following ss/sl for femboy aesthetics?
>>
And now I have not seen anyone in my gym do more than 10 dips or pullups, no benches over 165, no squats over 275, no one is "aesthetic", have not seen a deadlift over 315, and most of the guys weigh under 170 now. Its gotten really bad the past 3-4 years. "Lifting" has gotten much worse since people were just told to do SS for a whole 3-5 months to learn how to lift. Just go to the gym and work the 2nd and 7th largest muscles ("to failure") in your upper body for 20-30 minutes 2x a week and jog on the treadmill after doing some crunches on a bosu ball. That will fix everything. Remember, when you are trying to learn a skill, what you want to do is try and learn 16-24 new skills all at once. With no plan to improve on any of them aside from looking at yourself in the mirror. That's how skill development works.
>>
>>77146122
>>77146055
Lmfao I forgot about this, the refusal to work arms was one of the most absurd things to ever happen in anything I've ever seen.
>>
>>77142272
You just had to be there back then to really feel how intense the pushback was against machines and in favor of barbell compounds in online discourse.

>>77146055
Ahaha, yeah, remember that broscience about squat and deadlift-induced HGH production giving you bigger arms?
