Shouldn't simply doing the same movements witht he same amount of muscle engagement give the same results regardless of if you're lifting a real physical weight or not? Imaginary weight lifting should be just as effective.

That's called functional strength. Walking with weight is even better because it's full body workout unless you're training for something specific
