...did you just start doing back extensions yesterday? Any intermediate can do at least 3-4 plates for reps. After that, most swap out the plates for loaded barbells due to grip issues.

Of all the good things you can say about this exercise this is NOT it. I loved doing hypers but I had to trade them for good mornings when I capped out at doing them with a weighed vest with full pockets AND a 45 in my hands.

No you can injury yourself on this if you were going to get injured anyway on deadlifts.

I mean all this can do really is give your lower back a pump. It won’t come close to the benefits of deadlifting. If you’re so worried about injuries then just stop lifting. If you don’t want to then just don’t deadlift with high frequency. Deadlift once every 1-2 weeks
