at what weight should I start deadlifting with straps?

I am doing stronglifts right now and deadlift 1x5 at 275lbs. I feel like I can go way more but my grip starts to fail after one or two reps when I increase the weight

Meh, back in the day I would say a good standard is being able to 5x5 3pl8 no straps no mixed grip no hook. At this point though who cares, it's a back exercise and the best way to progressive overload safely is strapping in and doing it for safe reps you can manage. A lot of deadlift injuries happen because guys' grip starts to fail and they get into bad posture trying to keep the bar in their hands. If they are overhanding it goes down to their fingertips and they try to lurch forward and pin it on their thighs, or if they're mixed grip they twist a bit to favor the hand holding on better.

You could try to learn hook grip but at that point who gives a fuck. I started just strapping in for deadlifts and also for heavy barbell shrugs to isolate the back and traps better and found better gains. You can train forearms and grip independently.

I tried using a trap bar and was able to go up to 3plt without too much difficulty. on a regular bar I have been using mixed grip though

Do whatever you feel like. I DL strapless and beltless at 260kg but I use straps for pendlay rows. It’s all about what you really want out of your exercise. I’m not at numbers I feel like straps would help me much but instead put me in a different position than what I’m used to which would increase the risk of injury.

I just use hook grip whenever I can't lockout because of my grip
otherwise I try to hold it overhand for at least the first rep; if not the whole set because sometimes I have good days when it comes to grip

How is it possible for your prop to fail at 275lbs? How old are you op? And what's your body type? Also are you using alternate grip and chalk? Those should solve it easily.

This is where you're very wrong. When there comes a time you actually want to use your strength you worked so hard for in the gym you're going to find out, and it's not going to feel good.
Unless you're a body builder, and in that case there's other stuff you can do, deadlifts aren't even needed

I’m natty. Same goal as you, 300kg. My 1RM was 200kg because my home gym barbell couldn’t hold more bumpers then I pulled 265kg at a CrossFit gym event. Covid plus kids happened so my goal has changed a bit.

I'm a very boring guy to ask because its pretty much on feeling. If i have to say something its closer to a 3x8 with 5x1 to end with. I always end with singles and I always try to increase the weight every set. Its so much easier to recover from imho. If i'm feeing good i'm doing drop sets while i'm removing weights from the bar.

Jesus 8 reps is a lot for heavy weight. Never heard of 5x1 but doing it in addition sounds horrendous too. And drop sets for deadlifts wouldn't cross my mind. I think I'll stick to plain 5x5 haha

Nah I think I’m just bad at explaining it. It’s a ladder with 8 reps until it gets too heavy for it to work, then it’s singles until I hit a top set. Then I do back off sets if I’m feeling good. 5x5 is still nice, I just don’t like staying with the same weight for more than a set.
