at what weight should I start deadlifting with straps?I am doing stronglifts right now and deadlift 1x5 at 275lbs. I feel like I can go way more but my grip starts to fail after one or two reps when I increase the weight
Until the point where training forearms and grip strength cant keep up with your deadlift, that's usually around 4-5pl8Now if you dont care about "doodlift number goes up" that's good for you because you can just autistically micromanage your program over matching your grip and deadlift 1:1.
I've been lifting for 14 years, use them whenever your grip fails. There isn't a specified weight.
>>77181831Never. Train your hands and forearms along with your glute chain by using double overhand grip.
>>77181831never let grip limit your deadlift work, but 275 is not very much weight so you should add some additional grip work to your routine.
>>77181831I started using them at 2pl8 (lol). Now? I only use them for anything above 4pl8. Don't worry about your grip, it'll get stronger over the years
>>77181831i use chalk when my grip starts failing.usually because my hands are sweating or the bar's nurling is worn out.
>>77181831Meh, back in the day I would say a good standard is being able to 5x5 3pl8 no straps no mixed grip no hook. At this point though who cares, it's a back exercise and the best way to progressive overload safely is strapping in and doing it for safe reps you can manage. A lot of deadlift injuries happen because guys' grip starts to fail and they get into bad posture trying to keep the bar in their hands. If they are overhanding it goes down to their fingertips and they try to lurch forward and pin it on their thighs, or if they're mixed grip they twist a bit to favor the hand holding on better. You could try to learn hook grip but at that point who gives a fuck. I started just strapping in for deadlifts and also for heavy barbell shrugs to isolate the back and traps better and found better gains. You can train forearms and grip independently.
You are completely misunderstanding training and have some really dumb goals if you do shit like this.
>>77181843You sound kind of small and weak?
>>77181911I tried using a trap bar and was able to go up to 3plt without too much difficulty. on a regular bar I have been using mixed grip though>>77181940can you elaborate? I understand the deadlift isn't (primarily) a grip exercise so what am I not understanding?
>>77181837i'd say it's around 3-4 pl8 on average, but it will depend on how much grip/forearm training you're getting in general
Do whatever you feel like. I DL strapless and beltless at 260kg but I use straps for pendlay rows. It’s all about what you really want out of your exercise. I’m not at numbers I feel like straps would help me much but instead put me in a different position than what I’m used to which would increase the risk of injury.
>>77182406>at 260kgDamn on what episode of my 600lb life did you star ?
>>77181831>at what weight should I start deadlifting with straps?i don't usually use straps until i go over 3pl8. if i'm doing something where i don't want my grip to be the limiting factor, i'll use straps for that too
>>77181852>2pl8? Heh. Literally nothing. No sir, my grip only starts failing at a weight that a 170 pound teenager deadlifts after a year.
>>77181831I just use hook grip whenever I can't lockout because of my gripotherwise I try to hold it overhand for at least the first rep; if not the whole set because sometimes I have good days when it comes to grip
>>77182416Coming 2027
>>77181831When you can't complete your sets without them. You're training your back, not your grip.
>>77181831learn hook grip and use it to warmup. use straps for your working set but don't loop it around the bar, only have it underneath to give some assistance but still train your grip.
>>77181831At the weight your double overhand grip starts to fail
>>77181831How is it possible for your prop to fail at 275lbs? How old are you op? And what's your body type? Also are you using alternate grip and chalk? Those should solve it easily.>>77181837And what is this? Equally as confusing. Your grip should fail, especially at that weight. I deadlift 185kg and my hands don't even begin to fatigue let alone fail. You know you're supposed to be exploding and, the bar isn't in your hands for that long
>>77181852How will it get stronger if you use straps?
>>77181911>it's a back exercise This is where you're very wrong. When there comes a time you actually want to use your strength you worked so hard for in the gym you're going to find out, and it's not going to feel good. Unless you're a body builder, and in that case there's other stuff you can do, deadlifts aren't even needed
>>77182406Nice! I want to get up there asap. 300kg is the dream but I'll settle for 250. Are you natural? What's your goal?
>>77182917I’m natty. Same goal as you, 300kg. My 1RM was 200kg because my home gym barbell couldn’t hold more bumpers then I pulled 265kg at a CrossFit gym event. Covid plus kids happened so my goal has changed a bit.
>>77182927Wow see you there
>>77182927One last question, are you doing 5x5?
>>77182934I’ll never get there tho, I’m 40kg lighter today and don’t want to gain that back, ever again. >>77182941Nah, my own modified 4 days upper lower. I swap my program every 4-6 month tho so program doesn’t matter. Right now I’m working with my wife after her 2nd pregnancy.
>>77182950Sorry, I meant solely reps and sets for deadlift. I've always done 5x5 but I feel it's excessive. You're one of the rare guys who has to try to kit again muscle, good problem to have
>>77182957I'm a very boring guy to ask because its pretty much on feeling. If i have to say something its closer to a 3x8 with 5x1 to end with. I always end with singles and I always try to increase the weight every set. Its so much easier to recover from imho. If i'm feeing good i'm doing drop sets while i'm removing weights from the bar.
>>77181831So long as you train grip you use them whenever you need them. Ignore any retard telling you to bottleneck your heaviest lift with your smallest muscle group.
>>77182979Jesus 8 reps is a lot for heavy weight. Never heard of 5x1 but doing it in addition sounds horrendous too. And drop sets for deadlifts wouldn't cross my mind. I think I'll stick to plain 5x5 haha
>>77183059Nah I think I’m just bad at explaining it. It’s a ladder with 8 reps until it gets too heavy for it to work, then it’s singles until I hit a top set. Then I do back off sets if I’m feeling good. 5x5 is still nice, I just don’t like staying with the same weight for more than a set.
>>77183071Ok that doesn't sound to bad, I'll have to look into it
>>77182443My grip still sucks, I don't get the point of this>>77182909I don't care for my grip strength. It'll get stronger by itself over the years, like how I can deadlift 4pl8 no straps or belt *now*.
Use chalk and hook grip or chalk and mixed grip
I always use straps for my working set. Because I just care about the lift not my forearms. But lately I cant get a good brace or position when bending down with straps and just use mixed
>>77182914Shut up fagtard.
>>77182914Correct. Also, building your grip gives you awesome, thick forearms. Very aesthetic in all (i.e. shirted OR shirtless) circumstances.
>>77184801That's the very nice bonus. Men admire it. Women love it, goes well with a nice tasteful watch too. This boy isn't taking the news too well though. It's probably too late for him haha>>77183995
