There seems to be a lot of debate surrounding serotonin. Some claim it is the “happiness hormone,” while others argue that it simply numbs people's emotions. Still others like Ray Peat claim that it actually hinders metabolism and conversely causes depression. I’ve tried taking 5-HTP and St John’s wort, and while they made me feel numb and anxious at first, once they started working, I remember feeling incredibly energetic and optimistic. So what is serotonin's actual role? Or is it all just a placebo effect?
