Anyone here work out at the YMCA? Is it worth it? Would it be any more beneficial than a gym, or even a local community center?

The ymca has started the careers of some strength monsters in the old days from what I hear. Not sure what they are like now though but I would rather train somewhere like that instead of at some crowded gold's or planet fatness.

I like my YMCA. It has good equipment and is cheaper than many of the other gyms in the area. It's on the way to work and within biking distance. Membership also is nationwide which is a plus.

I feel like they're on the decline as of late. Weights are weights so it's not like they'll inhibit you really. Wherever you can show up on time and do what you gotta do will serve for your needs. They're pretty cheap too so that's nice. I hope they don't shutter out of business anytime soon

The one in Scottsdale AZ was cool because I could go 5 days a week (and Saturday morning) while my kids would get watched in a pretty decent play zone. So they'd get out of the house, have a little early childhood interaction, and I would lift. Tried one in ABQ, sucked, not good for the kids. Would go to the one in my current state for them if it wasn't an hour away

The Y near me has a belt squat machine. I love it.

They have bad hours for me. Like half the time I start working out after 8pm and I don't want to have to always be worried about rushing to finish before 9pm closing.

it's all about location. some YMCA gyms rival local gyms in terms of equipment selection, some are motel gym-tier. they tend to be a bit run-down, but if they have what you need, they're a good economy option

I worked out there like 20-25 years ago because it was convenient and cheap. Of course all the machines were DYEL, such that I could max out the leg press for silly reps after only being a distance runner, but probably like a 6-7/10 gym overall.

FYI it was mostly full of geezers, but there were a few hot cardiobunnies and one super-annoying tren'd up manlet who was always there all day LARPing like he was Rich Piana.

OFC if you're not a poorfag just homegym and sign up for some kind of exercise/sports classes/leagues instead.
