Probably the worst boogeyman in /fit/ culture to this day. Once injured there is no going back. Worst mechanism of human body period.

If you take a complete break from all lower-back related stresses for several months, the herniated disc will heal naturally and you can easily get back to where you were before.
I herniated mine doing bent over rows about 3 years ago. On about my 4th rep my back popped and I dropped to my knees like a sack of potatoes. Everything from the middle of my back down to the bottom of my right foot hurt for about 2 weeks before the issue subsided. Scared me bad enough that I completely stopped lifting for about 6 months (I don't advise this).

Just supplement back day with supported rows and avoid heavy squats and deadlifts for a long time. You'll bounce back.

The biggest problem with "healing" is tissue avascularity. Sure, fluids will get pumped by correct movement patterns such as walking. However, most healing factors are caused by the immune system eating herniated material. Broken bones grow stronger. The discs or facet joints do not. The very thought of losing something you know will never regain at 100% hurts the most, in my opinion. I truly hope there will be some scientific breakthrough about true tissue healing, such ass signaling the disc nucleus for more cell production (might be dangerous, imagine spinal disc cancer or something like that) in order to restore its previous form. Maybe in some near future we will be able to get such treatment which will resolve the issue once and for all.

You tell me. I fucked a cervical disc a few times and it eventually refused to heal. I had to restructure my whole routine to not irritate it and certain movements like overhead presses are completely out. It's getting slowly better but I think I'll probably always have to work around it to a certain degree.

Just do planks before your workouts.
