I've noticed that quite a few programs are meant for roiders. There were some where I follow them and my body gets absolutely mangled during the volume phases. Like doms would just not recover between squats and deadlifts later in the week. Made no progress outside of what cones naturally during a bulk except what I would've done chilling with 3-5 reps under the same surplus.

idk, it's not that bad imo. the thing that sucks about smolov jr is that it's unsustainable so you can't repeat the program indefinitely. the first cycle would always give me a guaranteed 15lbs PR then the second would stall, every time, deload or not. the downside of high volume training is that you can't repeat only go up, never down or else you'll lose the strength that you just gained.

Smolov Jr is outdated and there are better programs out now but it's a fun challenge if you only run it for one lift. It got my bench up significantly, but I wasn't doing ANY other main lifts when I ran it.

Some are just meant for beginners. A 5x5 with 75% of 1RM on the squat is a nice workout if your 1RM is below 3pl8 you recover quickly. At 5pl8+ or / and higher bodyweights it really beats you up for several days.

My experience training like this as well (both high volume and intensity). Rapid progress, PRs guaranteed but by the end you'll have new lingering pains to take care of.
