what are the basics to becoming a competent fighter? i get you need some form of explosive resistance training and conditioning (which i do already) and good cardio (still lacking in this department)i'm thinking of picking up swimming and sprints to improve my rhr and stamina, as well as putting a lot of work into learning the 4 core punch types, mastering the roundhouse and front kick, and practicing 3-4 judo throws ad nauseaum. how retarded is this? i really can't join a fighting gym (bumfuck nowhere) but have many friends who are eager to spar and practice
>>77232266training with people that actually know what they're doing
>>77232266Emotional regulation. If you are getting punched your body is instinctively producing adrenaline and convincing your monkey brain to act like a retarded animal instead of a precision weapon. That and foot work. If you joined any real deal boxing gym your first six months is learning how to move your feet and not get hit. Punching back is the easy part, real fights are not kung fu movies where your forearm can tank a haymaker against somebody 50% bigger than you.
>>77232272well, finding someone with a professional level is gonna be hard as fuck cause i live in the middle of nowhere
>>77232275does emotional regulation come from experience? also how can i learn proper footwork and dodging without an actual pro tutor? experience too?
>>77232282>experienceYes and no. You experience cortisol and adrenaline spikes in your everyday life if you are a normal person. Recognize those and realize this is a chemical reaction in your brain. Think of it like taking drugs and then realizing the way you feel the way you do is because you have drugs in your system. Stay out of the monkey brain shit that you immediately want to do and think it through. As for foot work, if you don’t have a gym that teaches it, my best suggestion, and I’m not joking here, is look up how to dance videos on YouTube. Any kind of break dancing or electro swing stuff will get you to instinctively move your feet a certain way.
>>77232289thanks this is really helpful, i'll make sure to apply it asap. how about the move selection i picked out? i tried to keep it down to the basics, no flashy stuff but still id appreciate some insight
>>77232296Focus on footwork, on learning how to dip, not getting hit. If you have decent strength you can open palm slap the average joe into a KO. And the thing is, he can most likely do the same to you. Jab and right cross is really all you need. Judo throws are good if the opportunity presents itself but most real fights are settled in 1-2 hits at most. Kicking is kinda advanced because if you don’t know what youre doing you are getting your leg picked up and dropped to the floor and then absolutely fucked. Low snap kick to the back of the knee or heel to put them on the back foot is all you need . You’re probably not doing MMA with other dudes, you’re getting into bar fights with drunk blue collar white dudes or niggers. Knowing that a jab isn’t mean to knock the other person out but to set them up for the cross or uppercut will win you out over 90% of other guys.
>>77232315yoo reading this brought up an old ass memory of maybe 10-11 year old me in boxing 101 class, the instructor said verbatim "you find him with your left, and cross as hard as you can with your right" lolthanks for the solid, sensible advice, how can i work on my footwork and dipping/dodging with some dudes and no professional instructor?
>>77232324Like I said man, take a dance class. Lol I’m not fucking kidding. Learn to Charleston or some shit. All fights have a certain tempo to them and if you can move along with the beat, you got it made. It also helps with the mental of staying focused. Stretch. A lot. You should be able to make a damn near U shape with your torso standing on your heels. Ab work helps with this so hit the crunch’s. Another tip is let them hit your head. I know it sounds counterintuitive but if some dude hits the front part of your forehead or really anywhere that isn’t the temple or your jaw bare handed he’s likely going to break his hand and you maybe get a bruise. If he’s got mitts the size of Michigan then disregard. Btw I’ve had my nose broken 4 times in random bar fights with marines and was trained by a golden gloves boxer. I’ve won some and lost some and figured out what works.
>>77232266Start at 8
>>77232344oh haha didnt realise you were the same anon. thanks man this is genuinely good advice, expected more insults and less gold on this shithole of a site. ill get right to it
>>77232373what does this mean
>>77232375It means listen to the cuckold who told you to take dance classes, find another hobby
>>77232266did two years of K1 & MMA, and the first thing you learn is that getting punched/kicked in your weak spots really hurts you long time, so pick your fights carefully. Keep Sparring and keep stretching
>>77232266I’d stick to basic stuff. If you get good conditioning then you will have a solid base to work off of. Running and jump rope are great. Jump rope will help you get a rhythm with your feet which is where you set up most of your striking from. Lots of shadow boxing. You want to practice the jab and in particular the jab step. The jab sets up all your other punches and it’s both an offense and defensive tool. Shadow boxing is also great conditioning. One thing you can do is record yourself for a round, and observe your stance and movements. Are you dropping your hands? Are you crossing your feet? Are you fully extending the punch and returning back to your face?I’ve only done boxing so I don’t know anything about grappling or kicking. It may sound silly but footwork has always been easy for me and I attribute this to playing dance dance revolution as a teenager. If you get serious about boxing I would look into a double end bag before a heavy bag. Cheaper, plus having a moving target is more realistic than a heavy bag. It is satisfying to rip on a heavy bag though.
>>77232379Alright man, lay it on me, how would you improve your footwork solo? Trust me, I know how gay and lame it sounds. But it worked for me.
>>77232390>dance dance revolution as a teenager.SEE, I’m not wrong here faggots.
Look at all the state champions itt wowzah ! >>77232392I dont spoonfeed dunning-krugers
>>77232397Not a champ in anything. I’ve gotten dropped by a 5’2” Thai marine who snap kicked my calf so hard it sounded like a gunshot. And I’ve dropped 6’4” giganiggas who threw their weight around because it was the only thing going for them. If you wanna say my experience is invalid, go for it. But you’re kinda a punk bitch if you offer criticism and not a resolution.
>>77232417None of my business
>>77232390great reply, thanks mate
>>77232266Good genes and a quick reaction time. In my 40s amd was ganged up on. Didn't fight back but slipped two punches and caught them in between my bicep and forearm. Guy tried to headbutt me and I caught his head with my free hands. Then his mate tripped us up so I just bear hugged him to stop any punches on kicks. Tried to slam his knee onto my chest but didnt work. His mate pulled him off me and then pushed me and then I walked off. Was accused of stealing weed but never did. Had a knife but didnt want to use it just yet as I still felt in control. Wish I was bigger and stronger though. Only 74kg and 5'10
>>77232289>>77232282Read two short books. >fear, the friend of exceptional peopleAnd>watch my backBoth by Geoff Thompson. Helped me get over being called a pussy for shaking before a fight. As I shake loads with adrenaline and I always felt like I was the only one. Til I read that it was actually natural and your body getting ready for a fight
>>77232266learn fighting techniques, learn what youre gonna do if you do get in a fight. If it's a guy much bigger than me I'm not just gonna tackle him incase I fuck it up and his weight is down ontop of me. if theyre a similar size or smaller I'll probably use my grappling and try and submit them. You'll be surprised once you've been training for a while the gap between you and people who are just spazzing the fuck out.also I'd recommend just travelling to a larger fighting gym close enough to you. I know it's not that simple but you need some rounds of sparring to really become competent.
>>77233213buy an ad geoff
>>77233887Not Geoff, me names Phil. But I will always recommend those books. Growing up without a father really disabled me in regards to knowing how to fight and hold myself
>>77232266In regards to cardio, do whole body HIIT if your friends can't spar regularly, but the most effective type of cardio in mosf active sports is doing the sport itself. The best way is to regularly spar at light contact but high intensity
>>77235108yeah im a massive cardiolet, im talking winded after 3 rounds, 82 bpm RHR cardiolet. I'll be doing calisthenics circuits, sprints, swimming, and regular sparring + jump squats and other conditioning memes
>>77232266just osoto gari'd my first training my partner LOOOOL
>>77232266> friends to spar and practicedo boxing drills where you are relaxed and are just chill and playful but snappy. do light striking sparring. keep it playful. no gloves preferably. do all possible boxing drills that don't involve actual boxing - like the one where you hold a paper in your mouth and the other guy has to snatch it. 4 punches don't exist, it's all the same principle.do a lot of wrestling and hard wrestling sparring. wrestling will cover your "explosive resistance training" and conditioning. dont waste time on swimming/sprinting/anything but basic bodybuilding outside of that stuff.shadowbox if your friends are not available to spar.only train calf kick/front kick leg wise
>>77232266>what are the basics to becoming a competent fighter?A good punch and soem stand up grappling. Crdio is just there to make a weight class, you get your specific stamina with sparring/rolling and learning to realx into the techniques.Combat Sports training is the ost voodoo area of an already voodoo science (aka sports science). It's mostly based on myth and hearsay especially in the US. We make do with steroids, but ther eis no one who really understand the game anymore. Fighters today are worse than in the 1990s in almost every measure ffs.Read "The Arc of Boxing" first if you disagree.
>>77233750Also grappling against a big person is the move if you actually have skill and they dont. Infact grappling is amazing self defense to have against anyone. If youre up against an untrained person, and they have 50 lbs plus height on you, if you trained well you can most likely take them down pretty easily. Of course its best not to fight but obviously im talking if you have to.
>>77236451is basic judo enough or do you need to go full on BJJ and other stuff?
