On the evening of March 11, Ashley Oros went to bed with blurry vision. When she woke up the next day, her eyesight was back to normal.

“I had a headache all that next day at work,” said Ashley. “After I got my son home from soccer practice that night, I went to an emergency room near my home in Bay City.”

Nothing showed up on the CT scan without contrast that Ashley had at the ER. The busy mom of seven children went home, and the headache raged on for six more days.

“I was taking over-the-counter pain medicine around the clock, and I wasn’t getting any better. So, I went to my primary care doctor, who prescribed a migraine medication,” Ashley said.

That night, during her daughter’s dance class, Ashley briefly lost feeling in her arm. A friend suggested she might have a pinched nerve and recommended a chiropractor.

“I got an adjustment, and the pain went away, which was good, because I had to have my wisdom teeth removed the next day,” Ashley said. “When I got home from the dentist, I fell asleep. When I woke up, my mouth was numb. I tried talking to my boyfriend, but I couldn’t form words. I not only couldn’t speak, but my boyfriend told me to smile, and only the left side of my face went up.”

Ashley’s boyfriend had learned about stroke symptoms from a refrigerator magnet that explained the B.E. F.A.S.T. stroke warning signs. It stands for:

Balance loss
Eyesight changes
Facial drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulties
Time to call 911
Considering all of Ashley’s recent struggles, her boyfriend immediately called 911. An ambulance took her to McLaren Bay Region.

“I had a CT with contrast this time, and it showed that I had a 95 percent blocked artery and an aneurysm on my left side,” Ashley said.

Ashley did not suffer a stroke, but several transient ischemic attacks (TIA)
