If you don't care about that, you can just continue lifting weights on your own, and that's fine. Just like going on runs wherever and whenever you want for free is fine. In a proper race you'll have the entire 42km free of obstacles, people handing you drinks along the way, people cheering you on, and competitors pushing you to go hard (actually very important if you want to maximize your performance). Advanced runners pay to compete and to have official times, casuals pay for a fun experience with other like-minded people
