Companies like Nautilus (which invented the cam-based lifting apparatus which is the basis of a shit ton of machines now) needed a way to reinvent all kinds of simple movements in order to get repeat customers. Even before then, Zirkin in the 50s invented the pulley-based, weight stack machines so that his gym chain (Universal Gym) would be more approachable for the general public, and to maximize space in his gyms, meaning it HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HYPERTROPHY EFFICACY and everything to do with simply squeezing the most money out of his new business model.Now does this mean machines are useless?
