I want to improve significantly at swimming after having lived a sedentary life for half a decade. My lungs simply can't keep up with my muscles at all.I can't even go 50 meters in freestyle. Of course my form is terrible too, but I want to figure out how to best improve my lung capacity and endurance.I've no running tracks near me, is a treadmill at a gym the best I'll get? Should I hold my breath as long as I can while commuting? Are there any better techniques?
>>77271721You just do the ye olde couch to 5k plan. Repeat days if the next step is too challenging at the moment. You can cross train it with swimming or follow the same interval format. It just takes time to develop some base you can build on.
I'm getting into jogging again cos my body is fucked from the gym. I'm running in barefoot shoes. So i'm just running as far as i can until my calves ache, then wait until they feel better and do it again.Right now I'm getting about 100 metres further every week but I'm hoping its about to speed up.
>>77271754>>77271728My main issue is that I fucking hate running, I hate it so much. Is there nothing else?My head, my throat, my lungs, my stomach just hurt so much. Plus I have ingrown toenails. Listening to music helps numb the pain but its not enough.I can run 3K before I get tired but I want to fucking kill myself from start to finish
>>77271893Maybe see a doctor about your asthma or pulmonary disease before it kills you
>>77271901I dont think I have such issues, I just hate running a lot. People tell me the ghroat/lung pain is normal.
>>77271922Either you bitch more than a woman or there's something wrong with you.
>>77271721>i cant even go 50 in freestylethats a muscle issue not lungs. unless youre trying to do it in one breath. you do know how to breath while swimming dont you anon?
>>77272118>breathe*
>>77271721You're thinking about it backwards, swimming is heavily dependant on technique so you need to improve your form so that you'll be able to train better and your endurance will improve more quickly. If you just try to brute force it you'll end up inefficently flailing like a retard in short bursts and getting better will be an uphill battle
>>77271893>My main issue is that I fucking hate running, I hate it so much.We all hate it, man up bitch
>>77272175>>77272206Fair, fair, I'll get my shit together...I have a pal who swims, I'll ask him to help with form and get into running..... I will stop as soon as I get proper at swimming thoigh
>>77271922I was a heavy smoker for 15 years and I don't get throat or lung pain while running.
>>77272650Are you telling me that's not normal? Im 25 and always just assumed this is how it is. My retard parents and coaches just didnt care to mention that? Did they think I was a dramatic pussy? No fucking wonder I hated sports all my lifeOk, Ill go to a doc too I guess.
>>77272809I'm betting gold nuggets against peanuts you were just going to hard. Do one of these programs coaching to 5k or something, they're quite easy. Swimming is very technical, I knew obese out of shape shits who could easily outswim me despite getting out of breath after a flight of stairs.
>>77272809Don't listen to that anon, your lungs hurt because you're out of shape. People are recommending Couch to 5K because it's VERY gradual; literally 1 minute jogs with 1.5 minutes rests. You mentioned 3k hurts, but 3k is a LOT for a new runner if you're going even slightly fast.
>>77271721This happens regardless of cardio level. If you start out swimming you're gonna be gassed after two laps. It's because your technique is probably shit and you're not relaxed, causing you to breathe too fast and too shallow. Look up youtube vids on efficient swimming. There are plenty. It takes time to get good and that's most of the fun. Surprisingly few people persist until it clicks. After that you'll be oggled by casual swimmers left and right. It's a beautiful movement and it just draws attention. Combined with a good physique it's very attractive.
>>77271721Zone 2 cardio. Don't run just do walking on the treadmill at an incline at conversational pace. Most endurance cardio gains are made when the activity is more than 45 mins. When you are feeling fit after a few months then try adding in the more intense cardio like running.Going all out trying to run leads nowhere trust me.
>>77271893Try cycling. If you want to stay inside, airdynes aren't that expensive if you wanna go that route. Or just look on craigslist for an old indoor bike.Regardless of what you pick, keep your HR something in z2 and z3-- basically as fast as you can push yourself while nose breathing. Put on a tv show and before you know it you'll be hitting 240 minutes cardio/week without even trying.
>>77271893Rowing. Swimming. Stairs. All good.
As others have said, it's really more technique causing you problems than fitness. Once you sort your form and breathing out, the difference is drastic. You can just swim laps non stop, and then start to challenge your strength and fitness.
