I ended up with some loose skin on my belly after losing 60ish pounds and this happens to me when I do planks. I thought it was fat at first but even losing an additional 20lbs did nothing to fix it. Only surgery can get rid of it. I can probably afford to get it removed but it's not offensively ugly most of the time. It serves as a nice reminder to never let myself go again.

No excercise is useless. What some consider useless is goated to someone else. Planks performed at the end of a workout and done properly have great carryover to bracing properly during heavy barbell lifts.

If you can hold a 2-3 minute properly done plank at the end of a posterior chain day, your brace isn't going to be giving out during working sets.

You strengthen your core more indirectly than directly. The vast majority of calisthenics recommended by the internet to target them are absolutely useless. It's like learning how to stand through walking, as odd as that sounds. Shit develops naturally as you do different workouts.
