The gyms around me suck.
The only one open 24hrs removed ALL their free weights after an accident.

I've been coping using the work gym (machines only) and some dumbells at home but it feels like I'm wasting my time
I'm considering just biting the bullet and shelling out for a full lifting set (power rack, bench, weights, bar)

Is it just a programming issue or is having a barbell just THAT much better?
jfc gym equipment is expensive...

Ask the one that closed where the weights went you might even get something for free

He'd already given them all to a friend's gym, that one is too far tho

The longer you wait the more expensive it gets. I got my shit last year and basically spent 3k usd on it all for a rack, 450lbs in plates, barbell, adjustable bench, and 120lb adjustable dumbbells. Also other things like tractor supply floor mats, barbell collars, pullup belt, etc. Most of it is from brands where I could have spent less elsewhere, but I'll have the shit for years and wanted it to be nice.
I do recommend cheaping out on the rack and getting it from amazon, since it's all the same powder coated steel. You can find compatible attachments as long as it's 3x3 uprights with 1" or 5/8" holes with 1" spacing. I also saved money on crumb rubber plates, specifically from homegrown lifting because they offer thinner 45lb plates, and I prefer rubber over iron anyway.
The single biggest expense was from the ironmaster dumbbells and their 120lb expansion. I 100% recommend their type over quick change sets like nuobells or powerblocks. There are cheaper brands in that style now like eisenlinks that look good but I never looked into.

...why? are the machines shit quality? you can build muscle just fine with maachines and dumbbells.

There's 3 machines total (leg press, chest press, low row)
I love squats and leg press or dumbell halfsies varieties really doesn't hit me the same.

You're retarded if you can't build a good physique off decent machines. Unless it's all shitty selectorized cables that are too light, you'll be fine.

If you're broke don't even think of getting a home gym.

A workable home gym requires a squat rack, a barbell, a bench, and 2 of each plate from 5 to 45 lbs. The cost will be about as much as a year's worth of membership.
