Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Injuries are part of running you gotta do your strength stuff. Ideally before you get injured to prevent the injury
Everyone should be doing some form or core work and lower body lifting

>injuries are part of running
Do you realize how insane that sounds?
Why would you willingly accept injury.
But guess what they aren’t part of walking though. I walk about 8-10 miles a day and because it’s so low impact I can do it every day no injuries if I want to push I just incline walk
It just takes a tad bit longer
So why don’t you just walk and not get hurt?
>>
>>77408096
bruh you're in a running thread telling people not to run
Pro athletes with all the best physios and resources still get injured. It's part of the game. Minimizing the risk by doing your strength training is also part of the game. And when you do get injured you do the specific rehab exercises for that injury to prevent if reoccurring. This is basic shit.
>>
>>77408107
Runners get injured by slipping on a banana peel or twisting their ankle on a loose floor tile not due to overuse (over-misuse). It has nothing to do with the type of injuries amateurs get.

I would start by running on the same day as lifting. The hardest part is sticking to a routine, and doing it EVERY day is something that you only do once you're addicted to exercise like me.
Also just that the early runs take barely any time, so it's a waste to make them into an entire session.

And lastly because I personally think that treadmills are goated for beginners. Most beginners try to run way too fast for their level, but a treadmill can teach you how to pace yourself. When I started, my walking pace on the treadmill was 5.5km/hr and my running pace was 6.5km/hr. Just focus on becoming The Chad, with tiny beetle-like strides.

Just started C25K after years of inactivity but noticed my heart rate is around 180 when running as slow as possible and 150-160 when walking. get on a treadmill and explore the limits of how slow you can actually jog, the bottom is 0mph
you're also probably not walking or running efficiently practice alone should bring those down so do both (finish the program)

Guys. Sawa (the record holder) and Kejelcha (came in second during the same race). Both broke the sub-2 barrier. Granted, they had the super-one-time-use shoes, it shows how great they are to not only break that barrier, but to maintain a much higher pace for 42k. It's different from the le mile.

Base everything off effort for the first few months. Do walk-run intervals if you want to get used to the discomfort of rooning and progressively overload slowly

Used to have the same issue - your calves are probably tight. Foam roll before runs and do more calf stretches. If you can do calf raises on an elevated platform and go down really deep that helps too. And chill a bit with heavy hamstring work if you're gonna run the same day

New runner here.
I think I fucked up my right calf going down the stairs too fast.
It doesn't hurt to walk or stand or jog in place but when I squeeze the back of my calf 1/4 of the way up it kinda hurts.
Question is if I should skip my run tomorrow to prevent making this minor injury into a bigger one? I've been icing it and using a foam roller but I don't think it's going to be 100% by tomorrow morning
>>
>>77413593
You should do heavy sprinting tomorrow, more exertion = faster healing, especially for tendons.

movement helps healing but going full retard now is going to just risk injuring it more. But like you can basically still do most exercises up to but excluding hard sprinting.

So I started running again after putting on like 10kg and not running for 2 years, im 6,3 and 105kg and i've never had such a hard time running in all my life. I used to be able to do 10km runs multiple times a week and now i can barely do a 3km route around my block.

My oura ring data tells me my average HR is like 180 peaking at almost 190. The thing is, i'm on purposely trying to slow myself down when running, almost to a walking pace, but it doesn't really help as my HR is staying the same/still increasing.

Do I really have to stop to walk in-between my runs, to get my HR down until the weight comes off or should i just power through it and risk heart failure when i get home? Or is this a nothingburger?

There is nothing wrong with doing runs as intervals. Don't worry too much about heart rate and focus more on slowly increasing your time running time and pacing the best you can. I just finally got cleared by my PT to start running again. Though aerobically I can go right back to running straight (I did: 30 minutes) because of the cross training I did during that time (try 3 agonizing hours on the elliptical.) Though, reintroducing the pounding to my legs, it makes it hurt to do so. So, I'm just re-introducing it by doing run/walk per PT instructions. I'm now at 10min run/30sec walk. That was starting back doing 1min run/1min walk. Doing this, it doesn't bother my legs. I'm going to keep adding a minute to every run part until 20 minutes. After that, he thinks I'll be able to go except for long runs, which if I do, my PT says to use Galloway until my legs can readjust. It hurts the ego, but it has to be done.

Dynamic form stresses tendons and muscles more. Stompy form stresses skeleton, bones and joints more. Muscles go sore, joints dont (until one day you suddenly cant ever run again, because they are fucked). It is a trade-off - as with almost everything in life.
Short term you may get less exhausted, long term you just have to find your form/mode for different distances.

Solid calves. Congrats on the weight loss, too. However, you may want to switch shoes for something more comfy just eating the miles. I may be mistsken, but arent those Endorphin Speeds? I'd leave em for the faster pace occassions once you are down a bit more on the weight.
Alternatives may include:
Asics Novablast (similar width and drop, cheaper, fluffy foam, but not so long lasting especially at your current weight)
Saucony Echelon (originally for heavier guys; super solid, spacious, comfy, tons of miles)
Saucony Ride (same'ish fit as the endorphins, but no nylon plate, snappy enough, also good miles)

thank you anon, though i admit i like running repeatedly up and downhill during my mandated wagie lunch break.
i'd imagine dedicated trail runners have much higher ascent and descent numbers but i currently clock in around ~3900 ft ascent & ~3200 ft descent per week, tho manlet genes likely contribute too i suppose.
>>77417507
i've been testing out the chinkshit waters ever since a shitty pair of decathlon shoes shit the bed a year ago. i'm currently using li-ning red hare pro 8's and while the foam is dense, i'm a bit impressed by the upper. 500+ miles in and they're holding up, though the sole is gone at this point.

agreeing with >>77418989, just do incline treadmill or brisk walking until you get to normal bmi. if you can get a heart rate tracker on you it would help with keeping your exertion levels at a sustainable state. will help build fitness without the injury risk, it'll translate well into rooning when you get to a leaner body. just have to be patient with it

in the meantime i would suggest doing tib raises, heel walks, and calf raises. these barely take any effort to do, should be <5 minutes every day. you can do heel walks at the end of your walks

To run is to exercise not just one’s body, but the mind, youth, and health themselves. Running is gatekept by physical fitness and one’s own youth. Old people cannot run. They have fucked knees and bones; they are literally incapable of it. When I run past a fatty or a boomer, I mog them. Inside their mind, I can hear, “Urgh, stupid runner,” or, “Ew, exercising in public,” and I smile. They only wish they could run 1/100 of what I run in a day, but they can’t. They are simply incapable. They less of a human than me.

It’s easy to pick up a weight or walk on a treadmill. Anyone can do it. But running cannot be done by just anyone, and that is what makes it the purest form of human mogging. Running is visible proof that your body still works, that your knees, bones, lungs, heart, and mind can all endure what other people’s cannot.

When I run, I feel free. I feel like I’m pushing my body and mind to their absolute limit. I cannot get this same expression of youth and health from weights or walking. Running is youth made physical. It is health made undeniable. Every run is proof that I can still do what age, weakness, and decay eventually take away from everyone.

>>
>>77420677
if you can legitimately run 5k in 23 minutes then you clearly have some running experience and ability so it is probably down to effort
>>
>>77420677
Twenty three minutes is not really that bad for a normal person. I think it's the average for men in their 20's to 40's if remember correctly. Does he run more often? Law of specificity. You may have good cardio, but that cross over isn't specific. Crosstraining helps a lot with building a bigger aerobic engine (which helps with running), but specificity is a thing.

Pretty sure that's it. People decide to run, then they run full tilt like idiots, and after a kilometer (if even that much) everything hurts, they're incredibly out of breath, they feel like their heart's about to explode and quit. I guess some make it a week of running everyday like this and it just progressively gets even worse for them. Regardless, both quit.

NEW PB LADS!
22:45 5km
only been at this two months. Gonna start mixing in more 10ks as I found the first one enjoyable at a moderate pace. At first I thought "hey maybe one day I'll run a marathon" but now I'm actually committed to working towards it seeing these returns. Can't be fucked to run like 4+ times a week though, just extending distance seems to work for me.
Hope you lads have a good day and a good run
>>
>>77423428
Nice to see someone just be decent straight from the start. Sometimes it seems like all you see is people getting under 30 mins after like 2 years.

If you don't want to spend all week running you could also focus on shorter distances than the marathon. I guess you should just see how it feels to increase distances and decide if you want to go for the marathon. The marathon isn't necessarily better than the half marathon or the 10k. Some even argue that doing a 5k all out is actually one of the hardest things.

I don't think you need more than 4 runs in a week ever though. I think with 4 you can have much more high quality training than if you never have rest days.
>>

I typed some reply that basically amounted to ultra runners ( the 100+ mile in a desert type stuff especially) being a bunch of self harming mentally ill fags but deleted it.

But I guess it is interesting that my drug addled brain after 14 hours in a techno club decides that it's probably time for my body to get some rest. While these people somehow seem to crave this sort of beat up feeling i guess? Like I guess you have to be a bit fucked in the head for those things.

I won't say I can't relate at all lol but also I bet physically the club night is literally less unhealthy lmao. Like imagine what happens to even just your kidneys on a desert ultra.
