>Who is /fat/ for?
For excess calorie eaters working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I've been lifting for a little over a year now, definitely have more muscle on my frame than before I started but progress is obviously slow because of the caloric deficit. Day three and a half of new workout plan. Doing two a days, one cardio and following push/pull/legs. I was doing stairmaster for first three but tried row machine today since it's a leg day and what a fucking game-changer.

Hour 54 of a 72 hour fast and I spaced out and ate a cough drop. It wasn’t sugar free. Goddamnit. Am I fucked? Will this trigger an insulin response? Do I abandon the fast or still try to get to the 72 hours?
>>
>>77573417
>Am I fucked?
No, as a human being eating after 54 hours will do you a lot of good.
>Will this trigger an insulin response?
Yes,
>Do I abandon the fast or still try to get to the 72 hours?
In general you should abandon fasting, even if you manage to endure fasting until you reach your ideal weight, what you'll do? Keep doing 3 day fasts once a week for the rest of your life?
>>
>>77573425
Goddamnit not the answer I was hoping for. So I might as well eat?

I’m 47, 5’9, and was 185 pound a week ago and am now at 175 pounds. My plan was a few 72 hr fasts, get down to my target weight of 165 or 155, then eat healthy (Mediterranean diet) and intermittently fast from 12pm to 6pm for the rest of my life. Is that not reasonable?
>>
Monday I’ll be 1 week in a maintenance
This shit sucks
Losing weight is much easier than maintaining
Didn’t gain weight. So far a success
>>
>>77573430
So seriously one freaking cough drop stopped autophagy and my progress is now reset and I might as well not bother fasting the remaining 15 hours??? Is that correct?
>>
>>77573430
You're not fucked.
He's teasing you, but mostly right. Unless you're diabetic you shouldn't worry about insulin response. Also, you're overweight, not obese, you can dial down the severity on yourself. Rather, 10lbs in a week is way faster than you need, 3lbs a week is extreme, and while some of it is probably fluid and not fat, unless you're trying to hit this to fit in a suit or something by a certain date, to build the right habits it'd probably be easier if you relax into something more sustainable.

Relaxing isn’t something I’m good at unfortunately. I tend to be pretty focused when I want to do something. I’d like to lose weight promptly and keep it off. I was able to quit drinking 3 years ago, it wasn’t easy but I’ve been good.

So even if I ate just one cough drop, my body wouldn’t go back and to autopahgy fairly quickly?

>My plan was a few 72 hr fasts, get down to my target weight of 165 or 155, then eat healthy (Mediterranean diet) and intermittently fast from 12pm to 6pm for the rest of my life. Is that not reasonable?
Unless you're facing some serious health issue due to weight right now, you could very well adopt this "eat healthy (Mediterranean diet) and intermittently fast from 12pm to 6pm" plan now, and follow it.

It'll be a bit slower, but you'll have far greater chances of sticking to this in the long run, and it'll be far less painful.

Corn starch is even cheaper,
>>
>>77573471
The commitment is good, but weight loss isn't the same thing as sobriety, it's not all or nothing. A cough drop is not a grenade.
I get the inclination to make it a sprint, I really do, but at your age putting that same discipline into a more conventional diet with protein and a little fat to preserve lean mass and save your hormones will help you more in the long run.

Under what circumstances can the TDEE be incorrect?

I remember reading an article about the people who went on The Biggest Loser experienced metabolic adaptation and resting metabolic rates stayed drastically surpressed, burning 499 to 704 fewer calories per day than predicted for their body sizes.

Can other forms of extreme dieting induce this kind of thing? Whats the best way to get an actual test done for this, and could this legitimately be an issue for SOME (obviously not all, but some) of the people who say they have a hard time losing weight?

Study here https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4989512/

i think i'm having this issue. i haven't been losing weight for the past ~6 months after my initial 30 pounds drop despite eating 1500 calories daily. i went on a ~3000 calorie binge for 5 days and i'm feeling a lot better.
now i'm trying to ease back into deficit. i did 1800, 2500, then 1800 and today 1700 so far.
my TDEE is 2000. i did a break with 2000 calories for 2 weeks in the past but didn't feel anywhere near this good. i'm unsure if my TDEE is actually 2500 or if one should do a break at above TDEE.
i'm a manlet so it's very unlikely to be above 2000.
i tried keto (and 1500 limit) for 10 days but it didn't work.

metabolic adaptation is real but the key word is "adaptation." it's not permanent, and you can return your metabolic rate to a more normal tdee maintenance level, but most people don't understand that they need to do so gradually and deliberately if they want to avoid a lifetime of yo-yoing. of course some of the tdee lowering is due to reduced muscle mass, and that is not something that can be recovered unless you increase physical activity and build muscle.

She weighed herself after eating. Even if she did it before it'd just make her next weigh in have 3 eating windows within it instead of this one and she's not afraid or even care that much about specific weekly weight goals enough to shift how she operates.
Not as much progress on a 3 eating week but there's some.
Got these potatoes and they've been part of my diet for a while.
>>77572388
What if she eats zero carbs only some of the time due to fasting those times?
>>77573417
You'll be fine it'll hardly even register. As far as weight loss is concerned it'll make basically no difference. As far as fasting is concerned it's not enough to really do much other than maybe a minor insulin spike for a couple hours. Autophagy is a ??? Because most of the fasting studies only cover intermittent fasting and rarely go anything more than that, which is when autophagy kicks in mostly, but I assume it would only have minor effects on that as well. Unless the cough drops is like 200 calories, somehow more calorie dense than an Oreo, it'll be a blip on the radar. There's no reason to panic over it and if you ignore it then it'll basically disappear into the background, especially if you're doing a lot of back to back fasting. The schedule is the most important thing and if the panicking might cause you to alter your schedule so that you're no longer accomplishing whatever goal you had that is causing you to fast (presumably weight loss given the thread we're in) then just don't worry about it, on so levels except technically you haven't really broken the fast.
>>77573425
>Keep doing 3 day fasts once a week for the rest of your life?
Why not? Maybe not that often but as necessary to keep weight at healthy levels seems okay. It's what she plans to do. Why can't she do that? Is there some hidden bomb in humans that only goes of after your 200th 3 day fast and I'm going to use up nearly that whole limit just getting down?
>>
>>77574501
>bread
>carbs
>3 hour intervals
that's where you fuck up. Carbs make it so that your body stores more water and in general hinder your body from effectively accessing your fat as an energy source. Especially wheat based carbs and refined sugars fuck your shit up for a couple hours, effectively rendering weight loss impossible for that duration. If you need to have carbs, stretch out the time between putting shit into your fat disgusting face.

The only time you get away with short eating intervals and/or eating at TDEE and still losing weight is keto.

what's the largest amount of weight you guys have lost in a week?
there have been two separate weeks on my (admittedly so far short) weight loss journey where i've lost like 7 or 8 pounds - the second came after 2 stall weeks where i lost basically nothing
>>
>>77574942
It's not unhealthy, but your metabolism does fall by a lot when you starve, and this slowdown increases with time. That's the reason why religious people who fast a lot often claim they barely need to eat anymore.

Also, it'll be great if you can keep it going for a lifetime, but it's far hard after a couple of years, when you stop seeing changes on your body.

Whenever I go on a trip, for some reason, I wind up eating less, maybe because I'm with people or maybe because the food is different or maybe I'm just walking more, but I always wind up dropping like 15-20lbs by the time I get back. Maybe it's just water weight, I don't know, but I thought if I could return from vacation in the 490s or 480s, I could really find the motivation to keep it going this time.

I've looked into calorie deficit calculators and they all say different things, I don't know what to shoot for. Despite what a few spammers will repeat hoping to make it true, keeping your body in a state where it believes it's starting and start to burn fat is not healthy. It takes a lot of time for it to become noticable but ketogenesis for extended periods of time does damage organs, including the brain.

I'm not saying that this is not happening or doesn't make sense, but on the other hand, I've never heard of that effect ever before. If you are legitimately starving, yes.

Also, if my body needs carbs to forego this retarded effect, then it can fucking kill itself slowly.

And another thought, if the body does get enough kalories DESPITE this effect, what's not to say the damage will immediately be healed again.

Nor ignorance nor denial make you immune to reality.

> If you are legitimately starving, yes.
Ketogenesis is for most purposes legitimately starving from a metabolic point of view.

>Also, if my body needs carbs to forego this retarded effect, then it can fucking kill itself slowly.
Sure, slowly killing yourself to stick a cult-like diet is quite a way to go. But you'll probably just languish and degenerate.

>And another thought, if the body does get enough kalories DESPITE this effect, what's not to say the damage will immediately be healed again.
Long term ketogenesis damages the body because it consume certain stuff, not because your body actually lacks energy. It's only similar to starvation in certian ways.

For a bit of detail, around a quarter of a human brain by mass is made of class of fat called glycerophospholipids, other types of fats making another quarter of it. Having seriously reduced levels of these doesn't cause noticeable harm on short term (a couple months), but over a longer period of time neurons start to die at a quite fast pace.

As anons have shown you thread after thread, before modern times Innuits had exceptionally low life spams, around 40 after reaching adulthood, with fewer than a quarter reaching the age of 60.

Also, while modern inuits who no longer follow a traditional diet have a measured IQ around 90, in past time they were noted for being prone to cognitive issues and scoring consitently below 80, although old studies being very limited and often anedoctal.

>>77575312
>>77575320
Also, inuits following a traditional inuit diet were extremely prone all sort of mental issues, notably being 30 - 50 times more prone to suicide than other populations at the time.

It's also important to say that despite all the modern ideology of "all humans are the same", inuits' metabolism are quite different from other humans, often not being able to fully adapt to a standard diet.

So I guess, that if are an inuit, you can risk a diet like this on long term, otherwise you'll be like an African trying to live mostly on milk.
>>
>>77575325
what's a 'reta?
>>
>>77575333
Retatrutide, GLP-1 medication.
>>
>>77575312
Also, you need to understand that a primitive population being able to survive on a given diet doesn't mean they were healthy or living well, inuits were barely able to keep a tiny population going despite having insanelly high birth rates and living in an enviroment basically free from diseases.

Keto increases metabolism. If the body thought it was 'starving' it would lower metabolism. CICO lowers metabolism. CICO is starvation.

Keto preserves muscle mass better than higher glycemic diets.

Keto is the correct diet for weight loss.

Here's some content for you guys. It's been a rough year, for a while wasn't sure I was going to make it. Lost my dad in May to cancer and I turned to food like always to cope.
Stopped looking at the scale at all and just went whole hog not giving a damn and frankly hoping it would kill me.
Didn't think it would stop but something in the last month started mentally nudging me back the other direction. After eating probably 10k calories in one day of chinese food and pizza I could almost see the grim reaper and I just had enough.
That night I went on amazon and did a bulk order of bob's red mill muesli. Someone on /ck/ recommended it for nutrition and better poops.

I'll tell you what if you have never been on a full food bender you wouldn't believe what my toilet bowl looks like if I didn't show you. The shit just splatters everywhere but it's also thick and sticks to the back and it's a huge pain to keep clean.
In my past diets I've always done radical things like fasting or OMAD or just eating random stuff. On top of not working because I was just winging it my poops were just as bad with tons of nasty water shits.
I've got a new plan eating twice a day now and finally incorporating fiber as a main target into my diet so hopefully I can lose weight and not have to spend every day scrubbing my toilet.

Here's my breakfast/lunch, it wasn't bad at all but I think I might try adding one boiled egg to it in the future. Feels like it could use a tiny bit more something and I know eggs are super nutritious.
For my main meal I don't have it prepped yet because I have to get through some leftovers but it is going to be a sloppa combination of a couple of meats (chicken/beef/pork/shrimp), dried and boiled beans, a couple of bags of various frozen veggies and a little bit of some carb like rice/pasta/potato.

I used to think I could diet and still eat randomly and tasty stuff to me but just less of it. But it never worked. I need structure, the happiest time of my life was when I was in military school and I knew exactly what my life was going to be from wake to sleep.
I think the secret to saving my life is putting that structure into my diet. No more cheating and calling double whopper my one meal diet food.
I'm looking at the actual nutrition in food to some degree and trying to structure meals that will make me feel better and keep me feeling fuller.
My plan is to eat mostly the same thing every day until I can get into the habit of thinking of food as a fuel instead of the drug I inject to cope with the pain.
For breakfast/lunch it's a bowl of what I posted.
For dinner it's going to be the sloppa I mentioned.
Haven't figured out a solid calorie goal yet, I'm using Chronometer to track everything but it won't let me go over 2lbs lost a week which is absurd for my weight and gives me a wacky daily calorie goal.
Going to try to aim for 2k or less though. I just need to find the number that will keep the demons in my head from talking me into ordering a pizza at 9pm.
Anyways, sorry for being such a fuckup in the past. I've promised to lose weight before and failed but this really does feel like my last chance and I haven't put this much effort into it before. I never got a chance to show my dad a better me and I'll always regret that.
But I still have my mother and my goal is to become a real person before she dies so I can make one of my parents proud.
I'll do my best to be honest and report my weight loss on a more regular basis.

i went for a cheeky lab test without visiting the doc
>Vitamin D at 55 ng/ml (range is 30-100)
>calcium at 9.9 mg/dl (range is 8.6-10)
i don't like how my reading is at the edge of normal. in hindsight, i should have asked for the free calcium test as well.
for reference, my calcium was at 10.8 when my Vitamin D was at 85.
and my calcium was at 10.3 when my Vitamin D was at 100.
i took a single 50k IU pill and will do a proper full test again once i figure out the minimum number of pills i need to keep the hunger at bay. it'll take a lot of time since the effect of a single pill needs several days to manifest.
reminder to test and supplement Vitamin D as needed. fatties have lower Vitamin D than non-fat people.

Sorry I worded that poorly, it wasn't true military training. It was a military style school where you get your ged. Basically you woke up at 5am. PT till 6:30, breakfast and classes until 2:30. Then random bullshit until dinner and more random bullshit afterwards.
We did lots of volunteer work around the state cleaning up national parks and such. We were separated into platoons and they taught us marching drills and there was the usual yelling and group punishment and such but we never learned any actual warfare stuff or used weapons.
They did have recruiters out regularly though to shill us on joining up after we graduated. They tested us for the ASVAB. I wanted to join up but I was still just a little too fat to join right away. I went in at 320 and left around 240. It was a 6 month program. Told myself I would keep losing after I got out but the habits didn't stick and I eventually went back up and beyond.

yesterday she was having some of those heart pains again, and also her belly felt weird after she drank a diet soda. she's done this many times before on a fasting empty stomach so that's probably not the issue.
also she really thought about eating something. but she decided not to. couldn't justify it to herself.

Tranny-kun, do you know if you might have low potassium or some other electrolyte imbalance that could send you into cardiac arrest? You might want to look into that. If your potassium is low a bit of NoSalt in water could provide some potassium easily but NOT too much potassium. Too much potassium all at once can be deadly so pay attention to what you're doing.

my starting weight is 380 lbs and im 5'9" finally started counting my calories and im going to try and be down 100 lbs by next october, so 2 lbs a week. ive finally gotten to the point where i think just eating certain food is mega retarded and if i frame it like that it helps me like im optimizing something

on a side note i find it really hard to do self care but find it easier to frame it as "if i lose this maybe the guy i like might notice me" and it motivates me more. shit sucks. hope everyone is having a good night

I’ve gained twenty pounds since I was at my lowest weight. How do I snap out of it?
>>
>>77576615
I lost 15 lbs and counting after doing shrooms and lsd. They temporarily scramble your brain's default mode network which lets you break out of bad habits.
>>
>>77576615
was your lowest weight a healthy weight? first realize that 20 lbs is not the end of the world, it's not great but you can shed it off again. then recognize that if it was a healthy weight that you have a weight worth keeping and that it's worth fighting for, to not return to the clutches of obesity.
>>
>>77576615
>How do I snap out of it?
The method you choose to lose weight may be the culprint.

Started at 350 lbs and made it to 190 lbs. It wasn’t really a healthy weight but I was closer to my goals than I had ever been before.
>>

when i meant healthy i just meant in the sense that it was not like an anorexia/mr skeltal thing. what was the goal weight? if you lost 160 pounds you can surely get there from 210.

I'm 54kg (121lb) and 180cm (5'9) and I want to lose weight to lower my bf%, but I haven't been able to get an accurate reading on what my current bf% is. My neck measures 37cm (11inch) and waist 57cm (22inch) and the results/opinions Ive gotten have varied, and I'm not satisfied with how my current body compares to any example bodies. I started weight training 10-30 minutes a day and ab exercises 30+ minutes a day since last month when I weighed 119lbs, and with increased physical activity and a similar diet, I've only gained weight and it's a worrying upwards trajectory. I was able to stay in a 110-116lbs range for months with a sedentary lifestyle and similar diet until the summer, and now it seems like I'm on an upwards weight gain trajectory despite being more conscious about what I eat and a significant physical activity increase.
Is weight training the reason I'm gaining weight? Also, I'm currently on a calorie deficit but is 1,700 calories too many calories to get down to 120lb by the end of this week?

If this isn't a sophisticated troll, you have an eating disorder. Yes, you inflame when you weight train which retains water, and muscle weighs more than fat. Glycogen stores also go up. You need to come to terms with your body image issues over trying to maximize numbers. Eat a snack.

I work at faang and it's literally as impossible as you can imagine to not gain weight, the cafeteria stocks tons of cheap rotating exotic foods every day (last friday it was salmon with potatoes and pesto cream as option 1, greek kebab + pita bowl + salad as option 2, the usual rotating pizzas / soups and the constant burger + fries).
everyone except me is fat or skinnyfat (i'm hovering around 19% bodyfat), im fucking sweating just thinking about the food tomorrow but i'm on a fast.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Make him and your mom proud. Good for you looking into nutrition, making sure you have balanced macros is rewarding and getting enough protein and fat will help you feel satiated so you don't overeat. My advice is to not let a bad day turn into a bad week. Just continue the next day as normal. It's about discipline and not motivation. Meal prepping is what kept me disciplined to reach my goal weight. Even when I was 300lbs I still stuck to the 2lbs a week calorie goal, don't rush it because your calories will drop down like 100 every 10lbs you lose so eat more while you can. I believe in you anon. Also, you calculated your banana to 1oz instead of 1 banana and they're usually around 100 calories (don't forget to track cooking oils when you cook. common beginner mistake as well)

I've dropped 43lbs in 4 months using intermittent fasting (every other day) keeping my weekly consumed calories to between 7000-7500 I exercise twice a day on eating days and when I eat it's a 6 hour feed window and I weigh my foods and track my calories by gram. I follow the calculator in the sticky some weeks I might eat a little over but has never halted my progress. It's been easier to lose weight this way than keto, and I get to enjoy what I want instead of being forced to avoid some foods based on 'too many carbs'
