Why the fuck have they changed the captcha 5 times in the past of 3 weeks? And what the fuck was wrong with this captcha? It was simple to understand and easy to actually see.Even the fucking triangles and the circles was better than the current implementation? It's a simple pattern recognition test, really easy, The empty boxes take way too much time, it's hard to see, and it just drives people off.
you're supposed to only get one round of captcha. if you get 3 rounds, your IP is flagged as sus and it makes the puzzles harder.
Welcome to the Daily Programming Thread. What are you working on, /g/?Previous: >>107711909
>>107741385Except it isn't, and cannot be when it supports GNU extensions.
>>107741468You'd have to implement realloc() semantics yourself with a slap of raw memory like that. If you don't need that, then sure, use mmap/VirtualAlloc. If you do ... well, on Windows you can still use HeapCreate and HeapDestroy (although there's no HeapReset or somesuch).
>>107741395Is GC truly necessary? I've been working on my own language project and considering whether you could get away with smart use of arenas under the hood to avoid it, so unless explicitly allocated, all allocations would be assigned a simple lifetime and stored in an appropriate arena.>>107741424I'd appreciate your thoughts on automatic arena usage for pseudo-scripting language to avoid GC.>>107741458Could you expand on that? I cluelessly went with a stack machine, but it sort of mutated (stupidly) into a thing that sort of seems a bit register-like, because loads and stores access locals in the stack, so I mostly only use the stack for evaluation. It's wasteful though, since there's no optimization in place.
I’m tired of 6 years of my Spring job. Is Rails comfy? Will I be surrounded by fewer pajeets?
>>107741512>whether you could get away with smart use of arenas under the hood to avoid itLet me try to put it this way: see how many malloc-like allocators are out there that only accept a single size parameter, and base their placement strategies on that single piece of information. You think there's one to beat them all? If so, why are we not using that specific one, and ignore everything else?*Because there is no one-size-fits-all* optimal solution. An allocation of 128 KiB isn't any more or less likely to be reallocated, needing a copy or whatever to grow, or blocking other allocations from growling in-place. The only one who knows that - if at all - is the programmer.

And if it's not America it's just going to be Russia or China and the outcomes aren't going to be any better. There are countries that will cycle through violent dictator after violent dictator regardless if America is involved or not.>>107741330There are lots of countries in this world. America has some sort of relationship with most of them. Some of them are doing relatively well, some are not. The difference isn't how friendly they are to America, the difference is in the values and temperament of their own people. You can dislike America, that's fair enough. But to consider China your salvation just shows how mind broken you are. If you can't put together a functioning society at this point, that's your own fault.

What is Steam's secret? Why is Steam so succesfull?
>>107741226>Linux isn’t supportedsteam has supported linux since 2013. i remember all the posts about them porting their core games/engines to linux during 2012. many more games in the following years got linux native releases, though i suppose you're more talking about proton/wine. once dxvk came out, the temptation of just making a windows version that ran well on linux via wine/proton/dxvk was too good to pass up, just make a windows game and it'll work on linux, too. why not? i remember running steam itself in wine, when it was just for windows. what we have now is better than what we had, even if it isn't the ideal scenario.who can blame them? at the end of the day as long as a dev tests their game in wine/proton and it works, what's the difference? as far as linux is concerned, windows is merely a game runtime environmentthese days the focus is minimal effort, and as it is the minimum effort is to either use an engine that can export to multiple platforms, or to just make a windows game and use wine for the linux version. that has been an option devs have taken for ages. for example i remember when picasa released a "linux version" (2006!) and it turned out to just be the windows version bundled with wine>>107741361can't say i have
>>107741297It accepts the crypto sloppa scam games. Steam denies those unless they disable crypto.
>>107741398oh and don't forget, windows is the dominating platform. it has the most users. that means that a windows version is not optional if you're trying to make money.so think about it, what the path of least resistance? that's right, a windows game that works in wine. it'll work in windows as well as linux and even macos since wine isn't just for linux. wine is an equaliser, something "compatible with wine" means it works in windows, macos, and linux. that's what makes it so powerful. an executable that can run in any major OS /is/ a windows executable. and i say this as a long-time linux user, this is simply the reality.
>>107741162>We do have evidenceThis post glow.
>>107741398>>107741457for tl;dr, if a game dev wants to target all platforms, the easiest way is to make a windows game and test it in wine. this is the danger people have talked about with regards to the existence of wine for a long time, but pragmatically speaking, this was the only way a competing os could compete with windows; by being compatible with it.wine is the bridge to get people onto linux, if it becomes more popular, native applications will follow, but until then wine is the solution.
Do any of you use this? Is it usable in practice?

I am definitely not convinced the trade-offs are worth it in the case of using qubes os just because I am a tin foil hat guy. There are limits to this shit
>>107740673A few months ago I wasted a shit ton of time installing wonix on virtual machine to test drive it (Linux noob so I am very inefficient)It's the worst thing ever, the feeling I can only describe as something from the stone age
>>107741241>nta but I assume you could compromise QEMU, and QEMU has had a bunch of vulns over the years.there's difference between QEMU and KVM. KVM is the one doing the actual virtualization on Linux. Xen (type-1) is an alternative to KVM (type-2). If you use VirtIO devices (Xen uses Xenback drivers with optional VirtIO support) and keep the QEMU devices and features minimum (you could even compile it with Clang's CFI), it's not really bad. Look at where the QEMU vulns detected at. Then there's Crosvm that's more security-oriented and used in ChromeOS.>maybe you could also compromise some distro packages, or even qubes repos.it's not included in the threat model of Qubes OS. it's not a totally zero trust OS and you have to assume Debian or Fedora project didn't get compromised.

are KOSS headphones any good? or are they influencer slop?
Shitty meme headphones. Just get earbuds ( no I'm not calling them in ear monitors zoomer )
>>107734191I have KPH30i. Relatively comfortable and punch way above their weight for sound quality. Are they the best ever? No. But for the price to performance, I would absolutely get another set when my current ones break. They're excellent as a cheap and light thing you can drag around anywhere without worrying.
>>107734191They're actually good. I don't recall how they became the "TikTok headphones" but the Porta Pro have been around since the 80s and are classics. The Koss KSC75 are better though, especially if you replace the ear clips with a headband for a few bucks. Slap some Yaxi or knockoff Yaxi pads and you're golden.
>>107734191They were good cheapies close to 20 years ago.
>>107734191I bought Koss Porta Pro headphones in the 1990s. My brother "borrowed" them and never returned them so I bought another pair in the late 2000s.The cable on the new ones I bought was extremely thin and flimsy and broke after just a few months.I took the pair my brother permanently loaned back when I was visiting him some years after that. Those have a much thicker more solid cable and they still work.I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING ANYTHING PRODUCED BY KOSS IN THIS CENTURY.

What you likely have is "leather." At least if it's exposing a base layer of fabric upon disintegration. But yes, cheap plastic imitation leather will fall apart quickly if it bends and flexes regularly.
Why is my android phone using 8.8.8.8 as DNS even though I set it to use a server on my local network instead? Do I need to go as far as blocking my phone from accessing google dns when it's connected to my wifi?
I just bought a 32Gib 512nvme i7-9850H quadro t1000 with a 4k panel for $400 on eBay (and uncle sam fucked me for 40 in taxes and 20 in shipping)--and I am regretting it and wish I bought the cheaper $330 1080p 48gib option but bought this one because I thought that the 4k panel might be good since 1080p is a bit bad for split screen latex but am now regretting it since it will- Drain battery faster (might take up 20% extra)- Be a pain to use because I will be forced to set it to 200% scaling for a good experience with my external 1080p monitors (probably, I have never used 4k but xorg will likely strangle me too)- Cost more- Doesn't have as much ram- At 15.6" and normal sitting, I probably won't ever noticeI don't think it has been shipped yet but also don't want to try to return it since that might make me an asshole...I will have to go check if the seller even accepts returns...I am really crying over this...why is life so hard?
