were they a stroke of genius or a mistake? and how come no-one ever tried implementing rational numbers in hardware?
23 replies and 4 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
How many bits do you need to represent the maximum double as an int? Something like 1024. Then double that to represent the decimal portion.
We deserve an Int2048 type.
>>
>>107710926
The limited precision fucks things up really fast.
Can't even represent 1/10th as a binary floating point for example.

When you deal with financial data for example it makes far more sense to use rational numbers or just integers of cents or tenths of cents.
>>
>>107713133
it's just integer operations, which the compiler can use simd for. though in general, you have to compute the gcd of nominator ^ denominator and divide them by it if you want to prevent overflows, which can be an expensive operation.

The biggest issue of rationals is that you have to enforce the representation yourself. For instance 1 = 10/10 = 147/147 and so on, therefore unless you always simplify by the gcd some maths become more difficult.

one solution is to used a fixed denominators, so called 'fixed precision', but they loose the flexibility of rationals
>>
>>107710266
This post makes no sense, we use floating point precisely because it's a tradeoff over fixed point, and 'nontrivial' implmentation of wierd functions also is proabably exaggerated cuz numerical stability does not matter when approximating smooth functions far from extremes like 0 and inf where floating point always struggles anyway
You might as well have a whole cas system or bignums at this point
>>
>>107713266
>We deserve an Int2048 type.
Nobody needs that. Implement it in software if you're so desperate.

why do we have so many tools to organise, group, and access tabs, when bookmarks are at best relegated to a default filesystem? Doing something inbetween would be ideal. Make tabs organize easily and ensure you have to manually set it to remain loaded instead of doing that as the default.
>>
>>107713372
It doesn't even eat that much memory because contemporary browsers just unload inactive tabs (undoubtedly because of people like this). One of the guys was an actual data hoarder though. I got excited to talk to him, but his hoard was like 50k webpages saved as PDFs into a single folder without any sort of organization.

What's so special about Arch? Why does it get memed on so hard? People say it has bleeding edge packages but why is that so important? Is it better for gaming or something? What makes it different from Mint?

I've been using fedora for about a year on my main laptop and im thinking of going back. My previous laptop has been on the same arch install from more than 10y ago. I really like fedora, especially to put on the family laptops, but i miss the aur packages. I should probably just use distrobox for those scenarios i guess, would be cleaner and safer.
>>
>>107709451
>People say it has bleeding edge packages
It doesn't. Fedora Rawhide does, and the beta repos do, but the standard configuration only has stable releases.
>What makes it different from Mint?
Maintainers don't fuck up packages by patching them and don't wait several years to update them. This is how software updates work on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS as well. You might find Fedora or Fedora with Testing repos to be a happy medium. But as a Windows user Arch is the only Linux distro I can stand.

I don't get why people use Arch when Artix and Parabola exist

It's probably a little bit of everything. I have some ebay figmas that are definitely the real thing but must have been seconds because they have painting/printing errors. Those didn't even ship with a box or accessories.
For scale bootlegs trying to look like the real thing I imagine a lot of them are remolds. The details on them often suffer. Don't forget that the figure market itself stems from Garage Kits.

Another thing to note is that prize figures can be cheap enough that they don't even need to sell you the bootleg. They're already Chang tier when you get them in Japan. So it sort of depends on which bootleg you're talking about.

>>107712366
Closed eyes is a variant. Japan fucking loves doing exclusive/bonus shit like that and bootleggers are more likely to target those for better scam potential.

Likewise the AI bubble isn't about AI but rather is about the commercialization and overhype of chatbots. LLMs had actual use cases leading up to the AI bubble (especially between 2019 and 2022) and they won't be going anywhere ever. That's the point the anon was making.

Good luck killing millions of people who like to own things. You will never, ever kill the desire people have to guide their own economic destiny. Just because you think like an insect, doesn't mean everyone else does.

And yes, all commies LOVE more and more intrusive and rights-crushing governments. It's kind of your thing, isn't it? As long as it's one party, right?

if the minority owns everything and rest is poor
it doesn't sound like these people are good guys
these companies amassed it with corruption, killing and bullying smaller businesses, acquisitions, litigations from patents and so on
the capitalism is supposed to make everyone compete, but these companies fear competition so they kill it with power they've got, because they were early on the market and have money to bully smaller companies with law that favors the one with bigger pockets
their products aren't superior, they just bully everyone and prevent them from entering the market or acquire ones that succeded despite the odds to later kill their products (e.g. Google, Adobe)
