Freedom to fork things that work instead of improving them.Freedom to rewrite things that work instead of improving them.Freedom to have things not working because the developers have to account for a billion different configurations.Freedom to incorrectly configure your machine and cause obscure cryptic issues that seem unrelated and impossible for other people to replicate without taking the same steps.Freedom to have inferior software because the developers can't assert the user environment.Basically, freedom to fuck it up in every step of the way.MacOS "just works" because they control the hardware and the software.Windows "just works" because the user has no control over the entire OS stack.Linux "works in your machine" because you happened to have a similar environment as a specific developer. After using Linux for so long I treat so many things as minor inconveniences (like different display/audio protocols supporting different features, how enabling the compositor fucks specific games, and so on) that would never happen on any other OS.I just don't feel like Linux will ever go anywhere as long as things keep fracturing whenever they reach past a certain size. Having a BDFL in your project seems to work well but I don't know if that's a good solution, it won't stop people from forking your shit instead of contributing to a single effort.Comment too long. >settings are stored in the most obtuse confusing ways, literally in file and directory names (see: in the file name, not in the file)>try to change mouse scroll speed>have to download a third party terminal program and create files in random folders using an unusable terminal text editor that uses it's own special snowflake hotkeys for everything, and those files are then formatted in the most cryptic way imaginable>try to do literally anything>"just copypaste this unreadable braille into your terminal bro">HURR DURR WHY ARE YOU CONFIGURING THINGS WRONGBecause your OS is a fucking unusable piece of shit.

Hi, I’m mainly a Mac user for work, and I only use Windows on my gaming PC at home.My work involves low level software analysis and reverse engineering, and recently I’ve been doing a lot more work with Windows based tools. Transferring files from my M2 Mac to a crappy Dell Latitude using an external SSD is getting really annoying and time-consuming.So I’m looking to pick up a ThinkPad as a dedicated Windows work machine. so I’m currently deciding between a T480 and a T14 Gen 2 (Intel). From what I’ve seen, the T14 Gen 2 has Thunderbolt 4 and newer hardware, but the T480 is cheaper and more upgradeable. For my use case (RE, tooling, moving large files, etc.), which one would you guys recommend? Any downsides I should be aware of?

>p-please care about our "moon" mission. we're only flying past it and it's a giant waste of money but there's a black man and woman! please watch our launch Does anyone seriously give a shit about this?
>>108506248>The us need to focus on the lander because that shit is not going anywhere. That is true, but THIS LAUNCH isn't doing anything to push that back.If anything, NASA should cut off SpaceX and put their full funding behind Blue Origin, because that's the path to a lander in the shortest time.
>>108502208>runs windowsy tho
>>108502280That hinges entirely upon the assumption that NASA today is more advanced and more competent than 60s NASA. The opposite is true.Hitler conscripted Wernher von Braun from the rocket club,Nasa’s rocket were not working, so NASA stole him from Hitler. When NASA questioned him, he cooperated, but still their rockets did not work. So they put him in charge, and then their rockets worked. And then he retired, and their rockets slowly stopped working.Government cannot do technology except it buys, steals, or conscripts from the private sector.
>>108506297Realistically speaking, China can get human to moon by 2027. Lanyue (HLS equivalent) and mengzhou (orion equivalent) only need one more test which is an unmanned orbit and landing which China has already done multiple times with other missions successfully. Meanwhile the US lander is still in prototyping phase. The moon race is quite literally over.
>>108506501Probably. I haven't looked at China's timeline to see what missions they're going to do and when.

Is it a controversial opinion on /g/ to say that I preferred when TVs didn't have their own OS frontend?I'm not saying linear TV didn't have it's problems but at least it always felt like it did what I wanted, not what it thought I wanted. The golden middle-ground was when you connected a streaming stick to a HDMI port on your dumb-TV.
>>108505954>Plug computer in>Set to sourceEngaging with the frontend OS of a TV is a conscious decision mine occasionally still gives a setup reminder it's been 4 years just see them as oversized monitors>V. Nice for a desktop as a console experience
>>108505954You don't have to use the SmartTV or or connect it to the internet.
>>108505954It is based opinion. Shittifying everyday life is the opposite of what tech must do. Your car does not need update circle, if something works fine without computer, it should continue so
>>108506030I just have a dumb simple washing machine, plugged it into a smart plug with power monitoring and stuck a door sensor on it, connected those to home assistant and created an automation to send me a notification every 10 minutes when it's ready until the door is opened. No internet connection or complex electronics that will break and stop the machine from working. Just local zigbee network and full control for me to do whatever I want.
>>108505954Nothing wrong with that, but as TVs got more advanced and powerful, why not slap an OS in there? It makes it more understandable for normies.
Yes, I know this is the place where everybody loves to rice and have complete control over their system, but unlike some people who use Linux, I actually have a job and things I need to do.I have been daily driving Linux, and it is very good, but I was wondering if it is possible to still have a good understanding of Linux systems on what some may call a “normie” distro like Ubuntu. Do I really need to use something like Arch or Gentoo to learn Linux? And if I do use Arch or Gentoo, am I even really learning Linux? It kind of seems I would learn more about the package manager and whatever other stuff it uses instead of actually learning Linux systems.
>>108502677use shit, break it, reinstall
>>108502677Why do you need to get good at linux if you're just gonna do office work, just use any desktop those are intuitive enough to not need to be good at anything and then you just get libre and brrrt you now have a working mans machineOr you just webapp everything those just care about the browser you're using
>>108502677Learn Linux? No, you probably won't touch the kernel.Learn GNU/Systemd/Linux? Then yes, you will learn a lot regardless of how you install your distro. The only difference is some stuff might already be already streamlined if its common or you might have to deal with changing or uninstalling annoying defaults if it's something uncommon or abtuse. The advantage of "hard" distros is to make your computer behave exactly as you want or just to explicitly see what is being installed/setup. If you pick all default options or don't know what things mean then you should just use an "easy" distro. If you just want to feel superior just join the "I actually do work on my machine" crowd.
God I hate these linux newfagsThe distros are ALL the same, its the same fucking thing. It doesn't fucking matter, pick one with a cool logo
>>108502677It's all still GNU/Linux, the biggest differences in user experience come from the Desktop Environment as they come with a different set of applications and tools, some support Wayland by default others are still on X11.Then there's package managers like apt, the new formats like flatpak and snap, and whether the distro uses systemd. If you're happy with what you're using just spin up a VM to play around in instead of distrohopping.
Why? cat /usr/src/linux/Documentation/process/code-of-conduct.rstNVIDIA driver 580.142 (last I checked) runs, so why do (You) not install it? So do Windows vidya (through Linuxulator...)
>>108505685It is, implicitly, assuming you have the kernel sources installed beforehand.
>>108505704Based retard who doesn't know different distros handle sources differently.

>>108505635FreeBSD, Windows and macOS all have worse code of conduct, but also cuck license. Why would anybody use those? Those are basically Linux 10 years ago what comes to drivers and software availability.
>>108506288>have worse code of conduct,But it's not included in the source tree.
