I'm the third poster you quoted, I don't use xfce I just know steam is retarded and the overlay is completely worthless, there's literally no usecase for it. It's a disgrace it's enabled by default for every game

how did you manage to make the album cover appear alongside the tracks? I'm using ncmpcpp and it's been a hassle to set up the cover.

how did you get the panel to look like that? Is it just from a gtk theme or custom?
>>
>>106425516
I can't use linux mint, too many features they chose relies on GTK and even that is not the worst issue. Nemo file manager is too slow and its baked into the entire desktop and you can't change that. Even if you install a new file manager nemo is still installed.

Thats why I use arch LXQT. Just plain vanilla linux that runs smooth with x11 openbox as the window manager.

I took a window title background gradient, desaturated it in Gimp and make it darker, then set it as Background image in panel settings.
And yes, Gtk theme is also modified. Tasklist button active is set to dark color with low opacity, and button hover is the same but with light color.

I modified the default xfwm4 theme so there were no rounded borders or gradients, just flat like numix. There must be an easier way to modify pngs and xpms than one by one manually or is that is how its done? I think there might be some imagemagick wizardry going on somehow.

oh I know, I have one too, right next to my T480. I love both equally honestly. recently upgraded the battery on the A485 so both have 72Wh batteries now, and I swapped the keyboard for a backlit LiteOn like my T480 too. I'll be getting a new screen panel, glass trackpad and possibly dual heatpipe cooler from a T480 next month too
>>
>>106434338
Mine came with all the fixings. Probably will look into new heatpipe cooler too.
>>
>>106434379
the T480 cooler fits in it (including the dual heatpipe model) but it needs some modifications because the CPU plate screws don't align out of the box. I've seen someone post that somewhere: https://imgur.com/un40ZCu
my T480's already fully modded but I miss things like the better screen and glass trackpad when I use the A485
>>
>>106434400
Nice, I'm going to keep mine until I save up for one of the newer Thinkpad models preferably AMD
>>
>>106434446
I'm using mine as comfy machines mostly. like when I'm too lazy to get out of bed but still want to use a computer, or when I'm downstairs and don't have my desktop with me, or when I don't want to turn on my desktop because it's too hot in my room. if I need more power my desktop has me covered though so I don't need a super powerful laptop, just something that can let me browse, run a few games, and multitask well. both my Thinkpads work really well for that, including multitasking (my T480 has 64GB RAM, my A485 has 32)

I actually use it as a server (1 native, and 2 containerized services running around the clock), so it's monumentally comfy. Only snag with docker was having to disable a podman related service and uninstall a couple of podman packages, then I added the Docker RHEL repo, and was good to go. It's probably my favorite server distro, and their Xfce ISO is great if you don't intend to go fully headless.

If you want access to more software, stick with the Alma 9 ISOs: https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/9/live/x86_64/ Always takes the repos for new releases of these RHEL-compatible clones like a year or two to catch up with the previous one. CentOS was the same way (before IBM fucked it silly and gave it makeover).

https://pkgsrc.org/wip/
https://github.com/NetBSD/pkgsrc-wip
>>
>>106441162
Oh and to add to the pkgsrc linux problems: It seems to only include sources for openpam, which dropped linux support ages ago I guess because trying to compile it results in errors about missing functions and when I looked at those functions they were NetBSD-specific syscalls. And there is no Linux-PAM even in the pkgsrc-wip repo, so I just disabled PAM in USE flags completely (not that I needed it anyways) - BUT some edge case packages still somehow depend on openpam and cause it to compile as a dependency which required tinkering on my part.

Why don't you upgrade to a VA (sex with 3000:1 contrast) or a good IPS monitor this Christmas? Bro, quit TN and the God awful visuals it has to offer.
>>
>>106444306
I haven't had any reason to upgrade, but the monitor is on it's last leg. It's starting to show signs of failure, I'll have to get a new monitor sooner rather than later.

void is still alive and kicking
its beautifully simplistic.
only issue is conditional/oneshot services, but you can build simple userscripts for that/just use cron.
xbps package repo is really nice too. cured my distro hopping

It's the only desktop environment I'll use is LXQT X11 openbox+ arch linux because it's fast and snappy. Even on my gaming PC with a 5800X3D+6700XT I use the exact same setup.

Though if you are just a normie with some normie shit like a mid range amd cpu with a 3060, some mid tier PC with an nvidia GPU and its your only PC, just install linux mint cinnamon. It will game just as good without arch autism. Linux mint is great but man cinnamon sucks ass on lower end PC's and I won't use XFECES.

The reason I don't use linux mint cinnamon is my t440p even with a quad core can't handle it.

Mate is better than xfeces rightfully and so, LXQt is for fine specimen who want the classy Qt experience without freezes, fragmented maintaining and bloat.
>>
>>106447243
is this xfce with an extensive conversion scripting or an xp machine with a linux system you're sshing into or smthg ?
>>
>>106452417
yeah but what about the cute mascot though ? How light are a basic mate/lxqt installation in terms of disk space and resources ?
>>
>>106452422
this is actually XFCE, it's obvious because of some boxes/painting on the windows not being fully accurate, and there is Linux only behavior for some of the applications running, like for Element missing an icon based on the conditions it would be running as well as the proportions/size not being 100% accurate.
>>106452437
>Cute mascot
Just slap an image on your fetch, your launcher icon or on your wallpaper. You have to open the about window somewhere to see it anyways.
>>
>>106452437
>How light are a basic mate/lxqt installation in terms of disk space and resources ?
both Mate and LXQt are actually lighter than XFCE, and if you have to worry about disk space for a desktop environment that's not modern GNOME or KDE Plasma I think we are on a dead end
>>
>>106452455
yeah I would have guessed, nobody is running xp in this day and age outside of a vm anyway

>>106452477
xfce is kind of annoying in terms of package usage because you either install the basics or the full suit and no inbetween, I was wondering how different it was on LXQT and Mate. Though I still feel like xfce is the one providing the most customization options of the three
