How do CPUs calculate things like sin, cos, square root or log?
>>
Polynomial approximations and lookup tables, mostly

I'm no export. Iirc that can vary quite a bit, but usually they just calculate a numerical approximation, albeit older cpus might not have this at all.

Bank in the day math kids literally had a trigonometric value tables of result of trig functions to the second decimal. This was important for exams, before the first calculators. Back in the day people had to trace graphs without graphing calculators too. Crazy right!

If you want to know real pain, look into how the first logarithm tables were calculated.
