The thing that I find annoying about zoomers longing for old computers they never used is the fact that they're all about looks and nothing else. Apparently the "soul" of a computer is just some gui shit or whatever. It's utter retardation.

As a 30 year old boomer, I honestly appricate the longing for the old days. The designs were better and more open for modifications. Let the children yearn for the past. Good things come back in fashion.

Anon, CRTs were way above high definition. HD means 720p, FHD means 1080p. The average $200 CRT sold in early 00's did 1200p. Prosumer and professional units did 1440-1600p, at high refresh rates too.

I have a 21 inch ViewSonic from mid 2000's, and while you could indeed do 1440p and 1600p, it had a "native" resolution (hard shadow mask limitation) of 1600x1200 so anything higher didn't look as sharp.

Shadow masks indeed scale very poorly past a certain point, but aperture grilles have pretty much limitless vertical fidelity. Most monitors also weren't really equipped with fast enough amplifiers to really take advantage of the highest possible resolutions, with the exception of Sony. In my experience their monitors overspec amps.
