It's shit. It's fucking shit. CachyOS, Bazzite, Ultramarine, and even Manjaro are better recommendations for noobs.>trying to install with btrfs breaks the OS>trying to change the DE to something less hideous than Shittamon breaks the OS>your peripherals don't work with Mint because the drivers are too old>your framerates halve in every game because the drivers are too old>Mint makes you use a nearly decade old version of GIMP (even though 3.0 came out half a year ago)>installing software and installing updates are two separate programs for some fucking reasonWhat the FUCK is the use case of Mint anymore? The clunky DE, shitty apps, and broken drivers make almost any other distro easier for noobs, so what does Mint have even going for it anymore?
>>106452184The selling point of Mint has always been"easy to install and looks like windows"That's the only reason anyone ever recommends it.
>>106452302>easy to installI broke it trying to install with btrfs, so that's not even true.
Fedora KDE should be the suggestion for new users. It's more modern than Mint and works with games.
>>106452466Fedora is good but the lack of RPMFusion means new users won't know how to install Steam, and once they do, they still won't understand why the FMVs don't work (Fedora doesn't come with proper codecs).
Winpleb here. What is an actually decent beginners Distro that isn't bloated and doesn't break all the time? I rarely play games and if any, not anything new.
>>106452494Basically anything not based on Debian/Ubuntu is gonna be lightweight and anything with Plasma 6 is going to have an intuitive UX.If you want me to recommend one distro, I say CachyOS, but the differences between it and most distros don't really matter.
>>106452184I use Mint Xfce for my boomer dad's computer and for my media server cause it just works. But I use CachyOS for my main build.
>>106452494>CachyOS KDE>Ultramarine KDE>Manjaro KDE>Fedora KDE>EndeavourOS KDEUse a random number generator to decide.
What the fuck is cachy OS and ultramarine Is?
>>106452302Which is weird because Kubuntu looks more like Windows and is just as easy to install. And can be more up to date if you don't use the LTS version (not sure how stable that is).
>>106452184have you tried mint?
>>106452494Debian
>>106452184people forgot mint got pawned years ago
>>106452585>CachyOSCachyOS is based on Arch, but is slightly faster than other Arch-based distros since its software has compiler optimisations for modern CPU architectures—if you want something Arch-based and your CPU was made after 2013, you may as well use CachyOS.>UltramarineA Fedora-based distro that has some tweaks—you can do all these within 5 minutes on regular Fedora anyway. Don't take this for a negative review because Fedora is great and the 5 minutes Ultramarine saves are appreciated. It just goes to show that most non-Debian distros are gonna be basically the same as each other.
>>106452494Bloat is a meme just install Kubuntu.
>>106452692stfu dipshit Kubuntu has nearly 3x the install size of any other Plasma distro
usecase for btrfs?
>>106452318...How?
>>106452781>Mint installer>no option for btrfs in the automatic partition manager>go to manual partition manager>create volume>select btrfs from dropdown menu>install>doesn't boot
>>106452585>>106452667>cachy OSCachy OS is basically Arch's equivelent to Gentoo -march=native -funroll-loops autism.SSE is just as good/better than AVX most of the time anyways, and supports older CPUs.Also use Artix instead.
>>106452799>Does manual option>Doesn't actually understand what all needs to be done for doing it manuallyk
>>106452808So why should creating a volume and selecting "btrfs" make it fail to boot? Better question: why isn't btrfs officially fucking supported yet?
>>106452747literally the same size as manjaro or ultramarine and he asked for an wintard proof os
>>106452858And Ubuntu has perpetually outdated drivers that are incompatible with Windows-kun's hardware. He'll use (K)ubuntu, rightfully call it shit, but then call Linux shit.
I've never really had any problems with Mint besides gaming. I'm sure there are better options but I've already figured out how to get around most of the compatibility issues. I've heard of Bazzite being good for gaming so I might try that at some point.
>>106452858>>106452882Not to mention, older software means the newer QoL features Fedora and Arch-based distros currently enjoy are still nonexistent on (K)ubuntu; Kubuntu just isn't as Wintard-proof.
>>106452318correct me if I am wrong, but isn't btrfs autism-tier fs?
>>106452895Ubuntu is updated every 6 months same as Fedora if you don't use LTS. Not sure how much more up to date it is though.
>>106452920btrfs is totally preconfigured on any distro short of LFS.
>>106452184Works perfectly with zero fucking around on the old dell I put it on.
>>106453014Perfect means btrfs btw
>>106452815Got to flag your partitions correctly anon or the boot loader wont work
>>106452494Slackware
>>106453071>Got to flag your partitions correctlySo Mint isn't user-friendly then? rofl. Other distros give you a simple dropdown menu to select the file system you want for your OS, and some don't even give you the option for ext4 because it's irrelevant.
>>106453095Why would you even need to change your FS to begin with? Serious question since thats NOT a beginner thing to do anyways, so why even frame the topic around that?
>>106453167>change your FS to begin withEvery modern distro defaults to Btrfs because of compression, COW, and efficient snapshots, all of which contributing to a more comfortable computing experience on top of less wear and tear for your SSD. So, I want to select "Btrfs" during the installation because I categorically refuse to use ext4.
>>106453088People will say this is a troll but it's not if you know you're going to be dedicated to really learning linux, because it's very easy to install but after that it's fuck you sink or swim. Also, the default full install includes a very wide variety of software so not only are most things working at least in some capacity OOB, you get to take a nice tour of various ways to do things in linux and can decide what you like.it's not for everyone but if it is you probably know
What bootloader is preferred?
>>106453525grub
>>106452184Very true. It runs well on old hardware which is nice but ex Windows users with a real PC should go for something that gets more updates + KDE
>>106452184>What the FUCK is the use case of Mint anymore? It's a testbed for developing the Cinnamon desktop environment. It serves it's use case, some distribution has to be used to test something so it can be used on a real distribution like Debian. Gnome OS is used to test GNOME. KDE Neon is used to test KDE. PopOS is used to test COSMIC. Fedora is used to test for RHEL. openSUSE is used to test for SLE. There's no real use case for any normal user to use any of those distributions, similar to how no user should use DIY lego block building distros like Arch/Gentoo either, which are instead used as lightweight DIY legos to build actual legitimate distributions like ChromeOS and SteamOS. The average user only needs to use Debian Stable if they're tech adept, and Ubuntu LTS if they're tech illiterate and need handholding, the cost is Ubuntu advertising their account and pro subscription in the distro but in return you get disk encryption, apparmor, proprietary codecs, fonts, and drivers as well as GUI for everything setup out of the box.tldr; use debian if ur not a retard, use ubuntu if ur a retard. stop complaining that testbed "distros" exist for real projects like desktop environments or other real operating systems
