Why shouldn’t I buy a Mac Mini m4 in 2025??? Please stop me from pulling the trigger /g/
unironically: what is your usecase?also, very important: what monitor do you have?

>>106460341When OSX was launched it was by no means a very sophisticated Unix system. It had an old kernel, an old userland, poor compatibility with modern Unix, primitive development tools and a very pretty UI.Over time Apple addressed the majority of the problems with its Unix stack: they improved compatibility, improved their kernel, more open source software started working and things worked out of the box.The most pragmatic contributors to Linux and open source gradually changed their goals from "an world run by open source" to "the open web". Others found that messing around with their audio card every six months to play music and the hardships of watching video on Linux were not worth that much. People started moving to OSX.Many hackers moved to OSX. It was a good looking Unix, with working audio, PDF viewers, working video drivers, codecs for watching movies and at the end of the day, a very pleasant system to use. Many exchanged absolute configurability of their system for a stable system.

They have a bug with 2.5gigabit ethernet, having to change an obscure setting to fix it.
>>106460341buy one then make a youtube series on the first 90 days of ownership. it can't be as bad as using gnome can it?
I kinda want one to fuck around withI always wanted a hackintosh and when i was about to build one they released the m1 which made the intel ones obsolete
>>106460551bullshit, I am using an M1 air and I never made the apple account and I haven't been pestered once in two years
>>106460341idk man I got lenovo p510 e-waste special for 100€, ordered 20 core xeon from aliexpress for 50€, 256gb ecc ram from ebay 150€.only thing I can't find cheap is stupid gpu so I'm still running original quadro, not that it's any worse than no-gpu in mac mini.
is there a list of macos terminal apps/commands?
>>106460341only makes sense to buy one for dev stuff or simpler usecases. if it's the latter they're a bit overpriced
They only allow for 60hz via HDMI cable, unless you buy a special adapter hack thingy bullshit and then it sort of works. Also using the OS with a normal mouse and keyboard that you'd use on windows is a fucking pain in the ass. A Mac mini M1 was my first MacOS experience ever and these issues made me absolutely fucking hate it and I went back to linux / windows asap, only 2 weeks later. But then I bought a Macbook Pro M3... with Pro Motion 120hz... and the amazing trackpad with gesture control.... and I love MacOS now. I just don't try to use it as a desktop. And I won't buy Apple's magic mouse and magic keyboard.
>>106460551I'm using an M1 Max to reply. I never see these pestering messages.More /g/ ignorance regarding macOS.
>>106460341>Why shouldn’t I buy a Mac Mini m4 in 2025???Because they are going to come out with an m5 soon.
>>106460373Linus rejected PaX/Grsecurity hardening of the kernel in 2008. MacOSX implemented the hardening features of PaX, so did Microsoft to some degree aswellLinux became a completely absolutely dogshit insecure system. When it once was the most secure. Then Linus refused to allow anyone to enforce the GPL copyright on their kernel code, and launched hate campaigns against the one French printer driver guy who did; doing a 180 on his earlier claims to enforce (in the 90s) "anyone that violated the GPL".He then threw all the hackers out of Linux kernel development, implemented a real-world-name-only requirement for contributions, and banned any anti-feminists males from kernel development, implementing speech codes against them.He and his friends now brag that they removed 100 percent of pre-2000 hacker code from the linux kernel: and that they freed up 100kb of space for wallpapers by removing the, working till the day it was removed, ReiserFS code.ReiserFS made linux on the data center and laptops. Before that linux was a toy OS. Grsecurity made linux a usable webhost platform.Linus spit on both those people. He spit on everyone that ever helped him. That's why hackers left linux: they were kicked out. When he needed them in 1993 he begged them. They answered. Then he betrayed them.Same with RMS: who won't enforce the copyrights: though he said the whole point of donating to the FSF was to1) hire programmers to write free software2) defend the GPL.The money just goes to women.
>>106460341Its kinda shit, what use is there for a low power mini pc that isn’t a 24/7 server or a corpo trash?
I did and I love it, not going back. This thing is quiet and quick
>>106462055Daily driver PC, duh. They don't have to be huge anymore.
>>106462082What do you use it for? Some creatives get good mileage out of macs but im not sure its that great for the average personfor the record I own a $2k macbook because I think it’s the best laptop you can buy, i just dont think mac mini is particularly great. Admittedly i dont really like macos which colors my opinion
>>106462106Web browsing, development, notes/documents, most of my games aren't intense high graphics games either just Paradox and civ so those run fine too. I prefer being on my computer to the phone/laptop so it's ideal for me I guess.
>>106460341cuz macOS sucks>can't game>development requires paying apple>all popular productivity apps for office use are microsoft softwares anywayyou have zero use for it unless you are into heavy photo/video editing and in that case you should be using mac studio instead.
>>106460341macos software is not only dogshit, it’s dogshit that nickel&dimes you on every stepThere isn’t even a good music player on that godforsaken system. There is no good file browser. There is no good image browser. There is (and cannot be due to apfs) the equivalent to Everything. The system struggles with properly rendering text on all external screens that aren’t designed for macs, which is 99% of all displays. The OS design and UI/UX is mediocre on macos 15 and the newest one is a step backwards instead of improving things. It’s decent for wagieslaves that need little more than facebook machine but that’s about it.
>>106462139>Web browsing,>development>notes/documentsYou don't need a mac for those things, infact for development mac is literally the worst computer you can get
>>106462158anyone still buying a mac after the whole liquid ass fiasco is simply a cuck
>>106462161Yes I do. My Windows PC was bugging/freezing up randomly all the time for no reason. I want something that simply works and doesn't fuck with my life. You have no clue bro, I have my work PC right next to me right now, development on that is hell. Bloated ass programs that crash my shit routinely. The mini makes no noise at all and works like a snap.
Only people who should buy a mac mini is grandma because when she installs twenty toolbars it’s slightly less likely she’ll sign over her house to a nigerian princeeverybody else should stick with winblows (or linux if you gave up on ever having sex)
Why not get their macbooks? Those are comfy.t. m1 air user. I dock mine in clamshell mode most of the time, occasionally I'll use it like this on the bed.
>>106460551this is completely made upt. m4 mac user
>>106462170What’s liquid ass fiasco
>>106460763All the usual UNIX things plus https://brew.sh/

>>106462379The pleb filter is massive. As I get older I start to realize its brilliance. Gatekeep and filter out the bottom 20% of anything and its quality and experience is doubled.
>>106460341Apple are evil scum.

>>106462055it runs recent games surprisingly well if you can get it to run on crossover. the gpu is equivalent to a 3060. It is priced lower than anything you can find with the same specs
>>106460341There's a myriad of reasons not go get one
most of those negative comments here shows clearly that they never used macOS
imagine a mac mini running local AI inference fuuuuUUUUUUUCK
>>106462183kek good one
>>106460341>buy a Mac Mini m4 in 2025>stop meyou won't regret it, they use almost no power and the os is reliable and simple to use.
>>106460453batteries deteriorate and explode
I wish I wasn't poor, I want a mac studio ultra
>>106462379> foobar2000 works on macOS if you hate MusicIt has none of ghe addons that windows has, it has no file format conversion, even the layout editing is shittyin short - it plays music like every other music on the planet but thats about it
I own like 6 apple devices and still think theyre kinda trashunfortunately everything else is even worse… except for desktops, where macs are rather pointless compared to an actual desktop. Stick to macbooks
>>106460341Well, I guess if all you want to do are browse the internet, watch porn, and draw anime girls, then it's alright.
>>106460523Laptops are extremely uncomfortable to use and have shitty tiny screens that suck to look at.
>>106460341The amount of hand holding macOS does is unacceptable to me. "This software is from the internet. You know, the thing where all software comes from. Are you sure you want to download it?" "Yes." "Sorry, here's the worst settings menu you've ever seen. Go find the secret box that will allow you to install this. If you don't want to do this every time, you can look up the secret terminal command and then go back through the terrible settings menu to super double make sure that you are an adult with an adult set of skills and that you want to install the software you looked up and downloaded." >>106460640It's worse.
>>106460341You should
>>106463547>i have to add a program to a list of exceptions once a year, save me niggermanThe issue with macos apps is that they’re fucking trash, not because you need to spend thirty fucking seconds per OS version to make them work
>>106460341Have you ever had a Mac before? If you like the Mac way then I see no reason to talk you out of buying it. Personally I'd rather put $500 toward a PC build.
>>106460341You should. Macos is great.
>>106460341You can buy an AMD mini PC for cheaper and with a better integrated graphics chip that can do some light gaming workloads at 1080p or 720p.

>>106460341Just buy one of those Ryzen AI boxes and run a real OS with more RAM and storage for the same price.
>>106460341idk, do the programs you use support apple silicon chips? Mine do not.
>>106460341Go ahead. Lots of gays own Macs.
>>106462690I tried once but it's now obsolete and my Apple™ hardware doesn't support the new one
