What went so WRONG?
>What went so WRONG?Apple Derangement Syndrome caused by poverty and your brain chemistry being altered by Google marketing and recommendation algorithms, which resulted in your making this thread for the 10th time. That's what went wrong.
>>106462628No killer app.
>>106462628the only people interested in VR are gaymers and coomers.Apple cockblocked them both for some insane reason
The thing was like 80lbs nobody could stand to wear it for more than 30min
>>106462792Even with an external battery? Pathetic.
They tried to enter a two decade old market with an overpriced product and no porn games
>>106462656>Apple Derangement Syndrome>screams rajeesh the ishill spammer>that gets shit on by everyoneGOOD MORNING SIR!
>>106462628VR headsets are inherently dogshit. Almost nobody actually wants to regularly wear a heavy clunky piece of equipment that covers their face just to do computer shit. The only half-reasonable use is videogames and even there it's pretty niche and only if you never ever have people over to play games with you. VR glasses *might* actually be the way to solve this but it'll be years still before we can get an acceptable combination of weight/clunkiness, performance and battery life. And even then, losing physical interfaces will be a tough sell. Voice-activated UIs are slow as fuck to operate, less accurate because language is inherently less precise than pressing buttons and very few people want to be sitting on public transport going "HEY VR-FRIEND, PLEASE REMIND ME TO BUY CREAM FOR MY ANAL FISSURE TOMORROW AT 8AM". tl;dr: Big tech has been insisting for decades on pushing a device format that may simply be irredeemable.
>>106462628The thing looks like a fucking NES accessory.
Is MS the only megacorpohomo smart enough to stay away from this insta-perma-fail paradigm? Being back Ballmer so we can have a nokia headset with a keyboard for your tongue!
>>106462628VR is completely useless for anything besides gaming and this is a VR device without games
>>106462900Yeah, I used Quest 3 for an hour and was just annoying how imprecise the hand controls are. Like, mouse is right there so why wouldn't I just use the mouse?
>>106462628VR/AR is less comfortable than looking at a conventional screen and using a nice big clicky keyboard. simple as. techbros will never understand that people don't actually want to enter the Torment Nexus unless it's got good ergonomics
>Too heavy>External battery pack and not long enough battery life>The eye screen thing was shit, either make it perfect or completely get rid of it>Had to adjust it back up on my face a lotNeeds a lot of work, hopefully they fix it cause the software experience was fine
>>106462628vr is a mistep from people who don't know what the future is going to be. apple hasn't innovated since steve jobs died. facebook mark is a lot closer with his ar glasses. vr will not catch on as long as you have bulky retarded headgear that blinds you
>>106462941Yes but MS also literally tried to release a gaymer table. I'm pretty sure the only places that bought these were avant-garde sushi restaurants though
>>106462976>hopefully they fix itanon the project is most likely axed

>>106462998yes but the Surface Table was made in a time where good touchscreens were still expensive and it itself was a gimmick product mostly made to advertise the rest of the Surface line, so one unit was like 15k MSRPI have vague memories of seeing one in a restaurant once and i think the target market actually was supposed to be cafes, gaming lounges, and nightclubs (i guess the idea is you sync your Microsoft Surface Phone to it and get music store integration and can run powerpoints to VC techbros and such)iirc it was also supposed to have XBox Live integration so while you wouldn't like play games directly on it you'd use it to pull your save files from home or use it for the "in-game rewards app" every AAA game had at the time>>106463023wtf this actually looks SICK
>>106462978>>106463040the tragedy of MS truly is that it is a software company. every time they make (or lease production of) hardware they knock it out of the fucking park, but then anything actually running on it is complete ass
>>106463023Shit... never even heard of it.
>>106463072That's why their few pieces of hardware are always good, they have to actually try instead of bolting it onto Teams and getting 99% market penetration for free
>>106462941I want them to bring back windows phone and I want windows to look like windows 8 again

>>106462628its still amazing to me every faggot in cupertino looked at the extremely stupid front facing screen and thought it was a good ideamaybe there's something in the water in california, makes them all retarded
Headsets are for gayming and porn. Apple doesn't have games, doesn't have porn. So they lied and said headsets were for business and coding. A couple losers chimed in saying how they work 6 hours in a headset and whatever. Turns out wageslaves don't care to spend $3k of their own money on something that has no games and no porn. I'm sure Apple is going to sell directly to large companies next time, probably schools too, try to edge in that way. Does Apple even understand the only reason iPhone is so popular is because you get the phone for "free" with a $120/mo. 2 year contract? They should have sold the iGoggles as a $500 addon for Apple++ or something.
>>106463134this but unironically. i was on Windows 8 until the computer running it finally died in like 2020>>106463170maybe thats why california has "WARNING THIS PRODUCT CAUSES DEATH" on literally everythingmaybe all the wildfire smoke from the exploding eucalyptus and shit is poisoning the air worse than boomers had with lead fumes
>>106462628>we want a VR audience but not the audience that wants VREven if they shipped a fucking magic chip that instantly teleports your brain into another world, if it's locked down and this is the mentality of the product team, then the product is already dead on arrival.
>>106463134windows 8 and 10 look pretty similar except for the honestly cancerous start menu that 0% of devs actually bothered making tiles for
>>106462628N
>>106462628Apple marketing doesnt know what Apple actually is.Did Apple invent the smart phone, or the mp3 player, or the laptop, or handhelds? No they just made it cool for normies. They stole it from sweaty tech nerds. They deleted all the gatekeeper bullshit nerds put on their tech. They prioritized form and easy of use over function and specs. This did none of that. This shit is for fat tech obcessed brown nerds, not for hot White women. Thats why it failed.
>>106462641/thread
>>106462706It’s really this. They made hardware looking for a problem to solve instead of software that requires the hardware.
>>106463230Nodding my head in agreement.
>>106462900>>106462960They need a control scheme that allows you to control with your fingers, but easily. Some kind of glove maybe? Maybe something even less, some kind of magnetic fingertipped thing? Then you can be on the bus, hands in your pocket, or on your lap, making subtle movements with your finger to control the screen.
Honest answer: it was dead on arrivalThere was already a VR headset market, but apple circumvented that and tried to target toward their existing user base who hadn't heard of VR before, aiming for the expensive high-end hobbyist market that didn't exist because they refused to call it a "VR headset"They alienated VR fans by offering no support for the existing game ecosystem, e.g. no ability to connect to PC with openxr or steamvr, and spun it as boring as possible, like a productivity tool which is the weirdest angle possible
>>106463402The problem is the usage profile you allude to is completely outside of their usual target demographics.
>>106463461>>106463230i thought modern apple was trying to be the new "executive phone(and peripherals/services)" brand now that blackberry has basically given up on the phone market instead of just MDM shitware
>>106462628>buy VR>*dies* (either from accidnets or brain cancer)
>>106462961i am a heavy user and i only jumped through the hoops to play kinohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVXt9lyMmRofor the average normaloid it is as useful as tablets and glossy surfaces on modern cars. maybe if the thing costed 100 dollars weighted 100 grams and had perfect optics then it wouldnt filter people so hard
>>106463466You think so? I don't think it's all that different from using a touchscreen. It'd be a mix of using a touchscreen and a mouse. I can't see why it couldn't become as ubiquitous as either of them.
>>106463756>RTCWwhat a fucking meme game, kek what a bitch
>>106463402The original HoloLens in 2016 had the Clicker. You would hold it in your hand, point, and click. It was pretty much mandatory because the hand tracking was god awful. I honestly wish AVP had this, because it would remove the requirement of the hand tracking at all, which is retarded. You can pair a Bluetooth controller to AVP and use the "A" button combined with your eyes to navigate around, but the controller is too big and bulky. Something like the Clicker would really be ideal. The only downside of HoloLens was the poor graphics quality and tiny field of view. You could only see the mixed reality content from the projectors in a tiny 640x480-like window at the center of your view. With HoloLens 2 they improved it but I never tried that one, only the original.
>>106463461>>106463338I unfortunately bought into the whole "spatial computing" meme when it came out, because I really thought it would be good. Now all I have is a paperweight that I only use for watching TV and movies once a week on the weekend. Don't get me wrong, it's by far the best TV and movie experience I've had, but... really? This is all it can do?It's not a "computer" at all no matter how much Apple markets it to be. It's a fucking VR iPad, completely locked down and only has 1-2 usecases. Gaming and productivity are not either of them. Computers are only real computers if they have a terminal and can compile and run programs, with no restrictions or workarounds. All this time I was looking for the wrong things. HoloLens, AVP, they are all approaching from the wrong perspective. The true solution for "spatial computing" is running X11 or Wayland on a PC with the VR headset as the output. This way you can run both 2D and 3D apps in a complete VR workspace. And you actually have a terminal and a compiler, instead of retarded locked down proprietary Apple bullshit. SimulaVR (X11) and WXRD (Wayland) are the two main examples.>https://github.com/SimulaVR/Simula>https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xrdesktop/wxrd
