If they didn't pay them they'd still end up as the default anyway if it gets changed to yahoo or bing or some shit but then Mozilla would barely see a dime. If anything this saves other companies from gimping their own products by sliding in a 2-bit default instead of the gold standard in.

They'd just spin off chromium and start Google Web and be right where they were before, and whoever was dumb enough to buy Chrome would be stuck with the equivalent of Microsoft Edge, just some non-google chromium knockoff.
