The memory chips are fine, the problem is that they're gazillion miles away from the CPU. When they're right next to the CPU you get incredible results. That's where literally all of the M1 performance comes from. Only being able to handle two sticks is because of signal integrity. Shitty latency is partly because of signal integrity. Not even managing to 2x the bandwidth is signal integrity. The IBM PC came out 44 years ago, maybe it's time we re-thought where we put the memory in a computer.
