I did it for free during undergrad
Not sure how others learn it, but I learned *NIX by reading books and manpages and installing FreeBSD manually back before it had a windows manager by default (still might not)
Good times

I suggest you learn bash scripting and the UNIX philosophy

My work uses Ubuntu server everywhere so I started using Ubuntu desktop and server at home. Has helped immensely with my job plus I've ditched windows for good :)
