"fast forward" is a decent enough name considering what it is, it being a reference to the operation you can do on a VCR to play video at higher speed, so it can be read as "it processes media quickly", and mpeg was by far the dominant video format when ffmpeg released, that part is arguably less forward-thinking, but maybe they didn't anticipate it becoming the dominant way to process any kind of media
