Moving Picture Experts Group is the name of the group that developed mp4, and so the name of their file standards is collectively "MPEG" because it's their name.
Then it was called "ffmpeg" because it was originally made to fast-forward through these files. But then got a shitload more functionality.
Pretty simple imo.

The naming trend I really hate is how more and more software decides their acronym name is no longer an acronym and is "just a name". Prime examples, off the top of my head are:
>KDE
>GNOME
>RPM
>QUIC
>WINE
Like no, you fucker, you chose a project name as an acronym. Fucking stick with it. You don't get to say "our name no longer has a meaning and is just random letters" because you fucking feel like it.

Now I want to code a Booktool called PTLwec.
What does a booktool do? Convert hardcover to softcover?

it's not that bad a name. "fast forward" is a decent enough name considering what it is, it being a reference to the operation you can do on a VCR to play video at higher speed, so it can be read as "it processes media quickly", and mpeg was by far the dominant video format when ffmpeg released, that part is arguably less forward-thinking, but maybe they didn't anticipate it becoming the dominant way to process any kind of media

>Moving Picture Experts Group is the name of the group that developed mp4
that's an interesting choice of example, for a couple reasons. one being "mp4" (rather than "mpeg-4") typically refers to the container format that uses .mp4 as the extension. also they didn't develop the mp4 container format, mp4 is a barely modified, standardised, version of quicktime's mov, developed by apple.
another reason being why mp4 and not just mpeg/mpg? mpeg-4 part 2 (the original mpeg-4 video) was brand new when ffmpeg first released, nobody was using it yet
