Bill Gates, the cofounder of Microsoft and a leading voice on technology, has made a fascinating claim: programming will continue to be a 100% human profession, even a century from now.

I've been saying the same
Even if AI can write all the code, who is going to write the prompts that make the AI build what's needed?

Software development is 90% figuring out what the requirements really are and 10% writing code.

>Bill Gates not agitating developers
For once, thank you. This market is not really developer friendly and even if it's not true, I really appreciate the sentiment. Sifting through the constant stream of news about the doom and gloom of coding can make me frustrated especially since it seems to be a specific target of AI.

Do I think it will be 100% human? Yes. People still have trouble connecting to Wifi and Bluetooth even if you spoonfeed them. Gen Z and the Gen Alpha are historically bad at tech to the point where Boomers are teaching them how to install Adobe. I don't think it will change until theres another generational breakthrough in tech literacy like there was with Millennials.

I really wish AI would automate at least some of it, or the most annoying parts of it, where I have to announce, "TURN IT OFF AND TURN IT ON AGAIN" until it works. If AI is so great, why do people still need developers and IT to tell them to turn it off and on again?

Don't get me wrong, I think AI is great. I just think the type of AI that will automate coding is worse than an actual developer. The current systems take a day or 2 where you might rack up a few thousand dollars in fees from it trying and failing over and over again. This easily becomes millions of dollars a year to brute force a AI that is as capable as a professional developer.

When would this not be true? We're currently dealing with exponentials. It took about a year of training after ChatGPT was first released to get to GPT-4. Then 2 years for GPT-5 after that. It might take around 4 years (unless there's some breakthrough) for GPT-6 which would land around 2027 to 2030. Here's the release schedule assuming exponentials for training time,

GPT-7 -----> 2035
GPT-8 -----> 2045
GPT-9 -----> 2065
GPT-10 ----> 2105

That's just the training time, which may not always be the case. However, we would also need exponentially more training data, which we don't currently have exponentially more.

Wrong. Bill has completely cut ties with Microsoft since 2020 after he left the board which is the last bit of influence he had on them.

I think Bill Gates realizes there's an AI winter coming and it will be around the turn of the century until it thaws. Gates is invested heavily into nuclear forms of energy which he specifically states can help AI. The current state of the research didn't pan out since many forecasts had 2025 as the year when we would solve nuclear power. In fact, we did achieve significant milestones (theoretically greater energy produces than expended) but significant hurdles remain to scale it out. The current geopolitical environment is not one where we would put a nuclear plant in everyones neighborhoods around the world and expect things to go exactly as planned.

Maybe Gates got a new forecast where 2100 would be the year when we solve pertinent energy consumption problems. It would make sense because the climate modeling specify 2100 as a very important year. Maybe the report Gates got lists 2100 as the most likely year where we solve our energy crisis and climate concerns.

It's sad to say, but maybe the AI summer is over. It was fun while it lasted.

I would say the groundwork was in place even before that.

My assumption is that it's exponential and it will remain exponential. However, I recognize that it can be hard to differentiate between an exponential and linear resources requirement.

If it is truly linear in terms of how much we need to level up AI, then you are right. However, if it's exponential, then our current generation of AI is what we will have to work with until the next AI winter thaws.

In a few years we will know for sure. My assumption is based on the diminishing returns of GPT-5 and I'm extrapolating on that for the future. Maybe OpenAI is pulling a Microsoft Vista with GPT-5 and GPT-6 will be akin to Windows 7. Personally, I wouldn't bet on that.

thing is
an llm is an *interface
its the equivalent of a keyboard
its a very advanced keyboard
with a powerful autocomplete we could say
but thats what it is
an interface

it has been proven that the future lies in heterogenous systems in the ai sense
certain parts ML
certain parts symbolic
and of course an llm as interface
