why cant noise cancelling headphones block out the most annoying sound of all : the human voice?or is there a pair that gives TOTAL 100% silence?

why did everyone stop using intel cpus for amd cpus on /g/?
>>106475004For in-ear headphones, you could try some of the "tree" inserts that go rly deep in your ear. The passive + active noise reduction should be quite good

>>106475050since when /g/ knows technology?
>>106475050intel fell behind in the techthey couldn't reach the smaller process nodes that amd couldthey couldn't get the power efficiency that amd could
>>106475004Two reasons: firstly higher pitched sounds are always harder to block (don't ask me why, but something about the higher frequences makes them much harder to match exactly), and rapidly changing sounds are also much harder to block - since the active mechanism has to itself process the sound, generate an inverse soundwave and then generate it from the speakers, there's inherent lag in this. Works perfectly fine for uniform drones (like engine noise, to some degree background crowd chatter or engine noise), speech is a constantly varying sound and even a tiny bit of lag would result in the inverse waveform always lagging behind the real sound and therefore never quite cancelling it properly.
>>106475050underdog story + intel antitrust bullshit got everyone riled up about "intel jews" and cheering for amd. then ryzen came out and it was genuinely really goodintel had been producing 4-thread midrange processors and 4-core/8-thread "high end" processors for a decade, when ryzen came out it instantly came with 8 core processors and started pushing up in the next couple of refreshes, WHILE also being pretty good at everything elsein the years after ryzen 1, amd has stalled a bit (we're still on 8 to 16 cores on desktop, and have been for several years already), but intel has been having a lot of troubles with its fabrication so it's getting worse and worse and amd has kept up with still making good cpusthe 3d cache was the newest improvement so now amd has the best processors both for workstations (more threads at a reasonable price point) AND for gamesthe problem of course is that if intel continues making shit cpus and amd continues maintaing the lead we might literally get a reversal of the situation, as in amd just having a monopoly and stalling any improvement and just coasting on their dominance while intel flounders and can't catch up - the fact is that both companies are jewish and enjoy milking consumers as much as they're able to when they can get away with it. but for the past few years amd has been the former underdog having a comeback and challenging the intel monpoly so they've been the ones putting out consistently good products while intel got caught and is struggling to improve
>>106475004Kind of but not really. Pic is considered class leading ANC. Normal conversation peaks in the 500Hz range, at which point the $40 earcups give you 18dB of attenuation and the $200 ANC system gives you another 12dB. Raised voices puts you in the 1-2kHz range, at which point ANC totally checks out. You can jack up the ANC to get a little more attenuation, but that also adds to the 'pressure' feeling ANC causes when it's turned on.Best method is to stack earmuffs and TWS earbuds.
>>106474948>>106474964Thanks for replies. I was already able to do it. I did have to disable secureboot via BIOS and then after install there was some weirdness with "failed to recover ME firmware" that I can't remember how I fixed. Also had to update BIOS for hibernation because it was draining the battery when it was closed. I think what I was wondering is from their perspective, what it might look like after I had done all of this. Do they just see it offline? Or maybe they see it in a similar state to one they deactivated? I am just wondering why they don't seem to care to get it back.
Should I be worried about "normal" high CPU temps (like 80c, obviously not in throttling range) under load damaging it in the long term or does it not matter as long as they're still in normal ranges?

If you plan on using the same CPU for more than a decade, here's where I'm not sure, it might be fine or it might gradually raise the odds of failure. Still, CPU failure is really pretty rare.None of this answers your question actually. When it's not in throttling range, or like 80*C, it's almost certainly completely fine long term. In theory any kind of non-negligible thermal load and especially thermal cycling adds a tiny amount of stress, but it's really negligible.

>>106473955i get where you're coming from, but at the same time, a lot of them can be set up for you. regular balancing, scrubbing, can be automated by your distro ootb, checksumming is a passive benefit, automatic snapshots can be set up for you with tools like snapper, booting from a snapshot can be set up for you, reflinks are a passive benefit as many copy tools support them, etc.
>>106477449True, if someone (like your distro) supplies you tooling pre-configured to take advantage of btrfs then it's good. It can also do things like alias du to the btrfs command and whatnot, periodically run defragments automatically, etc.I think you're right actually, most of btrfs can be automated (unlike a lot of the inconveniences and specific requirements of zfs for example). I was mainly talking about the perspective of just switching to btrfs yourself without any kind of pre-configured packaged environment designed to take advantage of it.
>>106477472sure, if you do it yourself or use a distro like arch where nothing is set up for you, then you will need to learn a number of things to benefit from most of it, though for something like arch you're going to have to learn a lot of things to take advantage of just about anything else, too
>>106477498>though for something like arch you're going to have to learn a lot of things to take advantage of just about anything else, tooNot true, and that's my point about "traditional" filesystems, you can just install ext4 or xfs and literally forget about your fs
>>106477524"anything else" as in not just filesystems. even traditional filesystems have features that you or your distro need to do to them to use. like fsck, defragging. there's not much to do with them simply because they don't have many features.but again, i understand your point, if you "do nothing" with btrfs then there will be little advantage to btrfs, with only a few of it's benefits being entirely passive, like reflinks, checksums, and not needing fsck

I bought a backup and backed up my stuff a little while ago, feels like I should backup again. How are you supposed to do this? I feel retarded but I'm confused about whether people just delete the previous backups and do it over again or if there's some program that has an automatically updating backup system.I bought some seagate backup drive but I don't remember it ever mentioning automatic backing up.
>>106478106It's called incremental backup. Look at borg or resticThe way it works is it saves exactly the changes that happened between the last time you backed up and now. So you get the ability to keep both as checkpoints that you can restore, but without duplicating an entire second copy.If you set it automatic backups then you can also set it up so it keeps e.g. daily checkpoints for the last week, then weekly checkpoints for the month before, etc... with auto-cleanup of older checkpoints to make it take even less space while keeping letting you rollback to an exact time for recent backups. But if you're just occasionally backing up by hand then you don't need to overcomplicate it, it'll just make a new snapshot on every backup
>>106478106Also I should add, if you just want a single copy that's kept up to date then something like rsync would be the tool to use, though if you're on windows or something then I dunno. But that's less safe than proper incremental backups, because if e.g. you delete a bunch of files and then take a new backup and then realise whoops you needed those files, that's exactly what backups are for, but if you "backup" by updating an exact copy then those files will be gone too. Or if some files corrupt and you don't notice at first and overwrite your backup. Etc. etc.

i want to start seeding a lot of torrents. several tb. Will need to buy new disks for this. 24/7, long term. What is better for this purpose, ssds or hdds? hdds are cheaper per tb but noisy, more power hungry, and i worry if all the different small reads, the random read performance, is just not sure to this task. poor plates spinning 24/7, poor arm and head constantly moving here and there trying to read bits of data all over the place. ill buy good hdds, nas or enterprise tier, but still, feels like the wrong hardware for this workload. ssds feel right, no moving parts and physical stress, less power, silent... but more expensive. but im willing to pay more if its the correct choice.

VR question, is it possible to disable/significantly reduce the fidelity on just one screen of a VR headset to improve performance? I was thinking about buying a VR headset, and I have a very poor eyesight in one eye to the point glasses can't really correct it at all(nor can surgery since it's nerve damage) and while I wouldn't maybe want to disable it entirely since I still have some vision, I wouldn't need more than like... 360p maybe. >>106477498You conflate using a filesystem with installing an OS on a filesystem.Think of it in terms of adding a secondary disk in your computer and deciding what to format it with – all your previous arguments completely ignore this use case. The distro is irrelevant in this case, users have to rely 100% on knowledge (or lack of it) and ext4 is hands down the safer bet if you don't want to babysit your storage.

>>106480612sure, if it's added storage like an external drive or just any other drive the OS won't handle automatically, then you will likely need to configure some of those yourself, like adding it to snapper, configuring whatever does balancing/scrubbing maybe. i couldn't say any specific regarding that as i haven't used those kinds of "easy" distros in a long time, before btrfs was a thing.i don't believe we're in disagreement. though i'm not sure i could say btrfs is worse than ext4 even in the case where it's completely unmanaged. i use btrfs on my external drives as well, i use it for everything, and i can't say i run balances/scrubs on them as often as i should (read: sometimes basically never), and they work just fine. about the only thing i can think of which may be unexpected is if btrfs appears to run out of space earlier than expected, but even ext4 has it's own similar gotcha in that regard. i'm sure you've seen countless people wonder why an ext4 disc seems to be 5% smaller than it should be. it's not the same issue or cause for sure, but i'm sure you understand my point. all filesystems have their quirks
>>106480726on that last note, while ext4 doesn't run out of space unexpectedly (that is, how much space it reports at the beginning is exactly how much space you have to use), this is because it preallocates inodes at mkfs time. which has it's own unexpected behaviour of appearing to have reduced space available from the start compared to other filesystems. while btrfs allocates metadata on-demand, so space may appear to go down a bit faster than you'd expect since userspace tools don't typically account for metadata.which one is better isn't really clear. for ext4 in some cases the default inode count may be overkill, wasting space by the time the disc is full. and the 5% reserved space is often overkill nowadays, too, not to mention it's not really useful on non-root drives. it's configurable, but we're talking about defaults/not touching anything here, so it's relevant

In Thunderbird you can mark mail as "junk", and it's got an auto-learning filter that can then automatically mark incoming mail as junk too, which works pretty reliably for me (and the kind of spam that I get). But it still plays a notification for incoming email even when it's a spam email that it successfully identified and marked as junk; is there a way to turn that off? I can't find any sort of "don't send desktop notifiations for incoming mail detected as junk" setting.I don't really care if it still shows as unread in my inbox or whatever (there's still a theoretical chance of false positives, however small, so I can just check later and mark them as read), I just don't want to have the notification pop up on my desktop and play the sound for things which thunderbird KNOWS (with very high certainty) are spam.
Why did HW accelerated audio go the way of the dodo? Is it just because processing became trivial for CPUs or is it for another reason?

>>106480124Spinning 24/7 is completely fine for HDDs, they can spin for decades with no issue. Constantly spinning up and spinning back down causes much more wear and tear. Make sure you configure your seedbox to disable power saving on the HDDs, so it keeps them spun up rather than constantly spinning them up and down depending on which torrent is getting seeded at a given time. The arm and head movement is a valid concern but it really won't move that much during torrenting. An nas/enterprise HDD with a 5 year warranty will be explicitly designed to spend 5 years constantly seeking. HDDs are really a wonder of mechanical engineering IMO for how incredibly reliable the mechanical parts are while also being incredibly precise, don't underestimate their durability. It's true that an SSD will probably last longer, the read-only usecase of a seedbox is very kind of the flash memory. But HDDs will also work just fine, and are vastly cheaper for bulk storage. Even IF you have to replace some of them, it will probably still be cheaper than SSDs, and mind you it's not like an SSD is guaranteed to last forever - any storage can fail randomly at any time. So just make sure your storage is design to handle disk failure, which it should be either way, and you're good with HDDs.The only exception might be if "several tb" is like 2-4 tb at most, in which case SSDs might be affordable while for HDDs this would be a very low capacity and getting into diminishing returns. (Nowadays you should be looking at 12-16+TB per HDD for good value, check diskprices.com for price per TB.) In that case you might say fuck it and pay a slight premium for SSDs if you want to.
>>106481831Why would you need/want that?
>>106481831Audio is still hw accelerated, it just uses $0.50 microcontrollers that can be built into anything so you almost never need to buy a "sound card" anymore. It's also trivial for CPUs but it's typically kept separate because audio is quite sensitive to EMF interference. Having a tiny separate chip that's just a bit outside the rest of the processing stuff helps massively to avoid having to worry about this.Separate audio devices still exist, but are mostly relegated to audiophiles. Since audio is an analog medium, digital audio is always going to be an approximation, and you can always make the audio processing more powerful to make it better - but with diminishing returns. So for the majority of consumers the built-in audio chip is more than good enough.

>>106483584I do find colour helpful, and to some degree helps parse important things at a glance.>gay ass IDE themesPeople do act very gay about it at times. Your IDE is a tool and the syntax highlighting is itself a part of that tool, not a fashion statement to post on reddit. I haven't changed my colour theme in like 7+ years by now, because it works well for me so why would I? Syntax highlighting for easier code readability is useful, syntax highlighting for ricing in pretty colours that you swap out every couple of months is just vanity.Having the same colours forever also makes it easy to get used to them and internalise the colour information for parsing - I know variables are this colour, types are this colour, brackets and keywords are this colour, etc..>more focusedIt's also important to choose a theme with good contrast. Selenized and gruvbox are two that I know are good off the top of my head. Plenty of themes (including even the original solarized) makes certain colours harder to see than others, often significantly harder, and if there's any word in your editor that you can't read at a glance because the colour is slightly too pale or hard to see then it has failed. Many themes are very much random or chosen for aesthetics and really drop the ball on readability. At the end of the day it's all preference, if you actually prefer using monochrome then that's what you should use. I'm just saying that there are a lot of garbage colour themes out there, and there's a whole "IDE ricing" culture that I really don't fucking understand either.

Are decompilers actually useful for anything practical? Like yeah you can take a .exe and get source code out of it, and if you compiled it again you should in theory get the same program, but when you decompile something you end up with source code that is totally unreadable. It seems like it would be practically useless for most cases. Or is there some way to make it more human readable? This came out of wanting to look at the source code for that old fish tycoon game... pic related is a random piece of decompiled code.
