Is it worth using in 2025? I just want to explore weird chatrooms and fuck around with people anonymously. Is hexchat a good place to start?
>>
>>106475090
I logged on last year and only the really popular channels I used to use were still populated, but they were practically dead and population size about that of the more niche channels (now all gone) that I used to use.

I was a dalnetafag though, might be a bit more going on over on efnet or undernet, if they still exist, would be surprised if much more though.
>>
Everyone can see your hostname
>>
>>106475419
So?
>inb4 DDoS
Firewalls and blacklists exist.
>>
>>106475419
In the 00s it was so easy to find a proxy for that shit, maybe it still is, I dunno, but we have vpns out the arse now anyway.

>>106475090
>IRC
Oh, I always thought IRC stands for Internet's Retarded Cunts. Thank for clarifying what IRC actually stands for.
>>
>>106475090
No. Everyone that's still there formed their friends group twenty years ago and they don't talk to newbies. You'll just see it as a ghost town and you don't fit in. Don't waste your time.

You use vhosts, Zoomer faggots
>>

Ircv3 sounds great.

Every once in a while my channel gets someone new on it and it annoys the shit out of me.
>>
How do I use tor with hexchat?
>>
>>106475711
Same goes for Discord
>>
>>106475419
most networks mask your host these days
>>
no all my old channels said join their gay discords never nigga you just keep the xdcc bots alive faggots
>>
>>106475724
Yes, I'm a zoomer, clearly, that's why I was on irc in the 00s.
>>
>>106476926
Yet you still don't know about vhosts which shows you're a liar
>>
>>106475543

is nearly war opportunists might try to take your castle and princess and car and shoes
>>
>>106479022
I'm 47, you fucking mong.. Why the fuck would I need to know about vhosts when I was using proxies? Holy autism.
>>
>>106475090
a good place to start is
irc.rizon.net

You are the one who will be fucked around with lol
Little zoomzooms like you have no idea the kind of shit we used to get up to. your little discord raids are so cute

people used to get a front server to forward their IRC
>>106475090
thing is, if you didn't use it 20 years ago you don't know any community and no one will get you in.
IRC gatekeeping is one of the worst, i understand the need of it especially now, but there is basically no point to start today unless you have IRL frens and you want to use it like a messenger
>>
I don't like how irc sends a message to all channels when you connect, disconnect.

Some servers give you a free cloaking (rizon). Anywhere else you can use free bouncers (which you will have to "trust", but your messages are exposed to server admins anyway so it is the same level of privacy) and these bouncers cache messages while you are offline AND hide your IP.
>>106475711
The programming related channels can still be useful. Also file sharing is still going strong there.
>>106480980
I assume most people have those ignored. Every other IRC client has an option to ignore them.

lol and that is the best free bnc provider you can sign up but have to do it in irc

alternatively you can use a netbook (seperate computer) as a small homeserver that takes like 1w~ setup irssi/tmux to ssh into
still uses your ip but not really a dealbreaker if network provides cloak or can use tor
>>
>>106475759
It has sounded great for nearly two decades now. Yet it isn't, because it doesn't actually exist.
>>
>>106481951
It is a badge of honor in my eyes and I've been using it. It is a bit suspicious that they offer it for free like that and they also happen to support the Chinese language, but again you lose the same amount of privacy as you would chatting exposed in any server.
Instead of a home server you could also use a VPS that can serve for other purposes as well.
>>
>>106475090
I never used it and never learned how to.
>>
>>106475662
I always thought it meant I Remember Correctly—the less used version of IIRC.
>>
I bet the most active channels where people actually talk to each other instead of idling are private warez scene ones

Is it possible for ZNC to have seperate connections to Clearnet and TOR? For example, I have one account for Clearnet usage (Rizon, Quakenet, etc) another account for TOR but without exit node, onion servers only (OFTC, Libera.Chat, etc)

> I logged on last year and only the really popular channels I used to use were still populated, but they were practically dead and population size about that of the more niche channels (now all gone) that I used to use.
IRC is alive and kicking. You're just in the wrong networks/channels.
> I was a dalnetafag though, might be a bit more going on over on efnet or undernet, if they still exist, would be surprised if much more though.
They still exist and have thousands of daily users.

There's also

network: irc.darwin.network
port: 6697
channel: #darwin

A fun and friendly place with knowledgeable chatters.
>>
how secure and practical is this?
>znc on vps
>vps provider or feds can access it and view my chatlogs
>what if...
>have directory that stores .znc (chatlogs configs etc) but encrypted
>script that moves to /tmpfs and decrypt from there
>run znc from tmpfs
>script detects if znc quit to encrypt and sent back directory location it was
>have killswitch if theres unauthorized access to vps to run script and reboot vps

I idle on some networks and pop into some channels from time to time
>>
>>106475419
On Libera Chat you can get a cloak
>>
>>106475090
It has never been worth it. Imagine a discord but it is a 4chan version of it.
>>
trying to 'fuck' around with people on irc will just get you banned. irc is a tightly guarded sanctuary, lurking a bit and occasional chat might allow you into some irc channels
>>
>>106475090
>anonymously
it literally gives out your IP, very dangerous!!!!!!!!
>>
>>106489196
its boring af unless you have a pre-existing or its about a specific piece of software. I used to ask questions in gentoo all the time but I didnt want to ask retarded ones but i ended up doing that anyway.
>>
>>106480334
Sigh, I had an old (senior citizen) friend of mine that actually set me up on a super underground account years ago and said to just tell everyone he let me in and I'd be fine. He got all kinds of pirated stuff off there and even had people that would send him weed in the mail and stuff, but unfortunately I was dumb and eventually just lost that phone and never asked him about it again or really paid attention to what was all going on in there. Now it's too late to ask him.
>>
>>106489299
irc is only good for private torrent sites that are picky about who they let in, at least in my experience.

public irc seems to get you kicked and banned alot... in my experience

using a VPN to mask ur IP is preferable.
>>
>>106489303
Where did all the old heads go? When I was 13yrs old on irc in 00's there were lots. Can't say jobs or kids cause most of them had kids and a job. They probably have more time now then the majority of millennials do now.
>>
>>106489343
most people never gave a shit about there ip's or whatever even in the private tracker irc. it just doesnt matter. I still see people talking in private tracker ircs tho thats cool just not a lot. Last extremely fast irc that I was in was alt channel for a private tracker that was no rules and got deleted after awhile
>>
>>106489370
your ip address is "YOU" if you dont want to to take precautions so be it. desu the most active irc i ever connected to was a private video game tracker. was weird that more people were on irc chatting then playing video games the pirated.
>>
>>106489411
do you know where you are? i know what an IP is and I don't give a fuck!
>>
>>106489415
never been raided good for u
