What does /g/ think of optical media? I remember when everything was on CDs and I remember how obnoxious it was when they get scratched, but they still seem cool. I know that Bringus guy on YouTube hates optical media, but I'm not 100% sure why.

Also check this out, some company is trying to make LTO tapes but optical instead of magnetic. I thought that was neat because it's like a real holotape.

it lasts much longer than tape if stored properly. Could be worth it for some orgs

a physical artifact that makes a piece of content 'tangible' is nice
optical is great since it provides that experience in a reasonably small and compact package

M-discs what about those? Those seem really cool but I never see people on here talking about them.

The company behind mdisc gone bankrupt back in 2016. Verbatim and Ritek bought the rights to use it, so you're just paying 10x the price for regular Blu-rays. Although DVD Mdiscs by Verbatim are apparently even better than the original mdiscs by Millenniata.

Not a single one. I handle my CD's and DVD's like preterm babies. In fact I lost a few CD's over the years to shit peeling off, but never to scratches.

OPTICAL MEDIA BAD
>>
>>106487421
Why?
>>
>>106485465
It's the most reliable form of media storage there is, so it's definitely got that going for it.
>muh disc rot
People just being this hearsay bullshit up, nobody has seen it. If the disc was properly made, it won't happen.
The problem is storage size, a dvd is 4gb, this is nothing current day. But really important stuff being backed up onto dvd is not a bad idea.

My only gripe with CDs is that it's not a very quick way to install things or for fast data retrieval.
It's still relevant to me enough that I put a Blu-Ray drive in my computer, and a memory card hub.
What I don't understand is why did OEM and PC part manufacturers remove SD/microSD ports off of laptops and computer cases? It can be expensive finding a good USB 3.0 SD card adapter that doesn't cook your card to death.
It's easier to find something modern with a random DVD-ROM drive these days than it is to find something with internal SD card slots.

How is asking about technology a bot post?

I've kinda been obsessing over optical media because I play too much Fallout.

This board definitely could use IDs.

You haven't seen that same post format on multiple boards?
>What does <board> think of x?
I've honestly thought it's the website generating discussion, it's quite obvious because the jannies or mods never do anything about it on any of the boards. You can literally sit at the bottom of a catalogue and report all the slop. There's a reason they leave them up.

I can't even find dvd m-discs at reasonable prices, I'm forced to buy a bluray drive

It's nice. Sometimes I go to a site and it no longer exists, or I go to youtube and the video was pulled for some stupid non-reason. Then I find the CD or DVD I burned decades ago and there it is. Feels good, man.

I saw a video a few days ago claiming that optical drives stopped being made. Please tell me it isn't true.

it's false but eventually only the shittiest chinkshit will survive

Are Verbatim's AZO/DataLifePlus CD-Rs still good?
>>
>>106494736
Backing up to a MLC drive like one of those High endurance Dashcam cards would outlast the rest of my life.
A lot of phones and devices like iPods and PSPs from the early 00s still hold their firmware just fine on flash storage, well over the quoted 10 years retention of flash.

Sony stops making blank discs but Verbatim and the others still do.
