They were pushing these things like they were gonna revolutionize windows laptops and windows on ARM. What happened ?

people saw that it's shit

>what happened
ARM is a fucking joke
It's not x86. It's dumb.
You would need to compile a programm for specific devices and maintain a gazilon builds.

It's the reason why samsung and similar drops support after 3 years on average.
>>
>>106492353
why can apple do it but no one else
>>
>>106492208
Microsoft is fucking retarded and decided drivers and software didn't need a proper compatibility layer followed by going "oh and you HAVE to have a copilot button btw also only surfaces get to have a snapdragon x for the first year -- hey wait come back ):"
>>
>>106492356
Because they maintain one single monolithic ecosystem for one single processor (M series).

It won't run on any other arm cpu even if you would port MacOS to it.
>>
>>106492356
The fanatics just suck it up. M1 chips had A LOT of issue with programs running on rosetta. That and apple is a walled garden, they can just force you to support M1 chips or use a specific version of xcode+swift or else you won't be on the App Store
Businesses using windows will turn MS upside down if their decades old 32bit software stops working.
>>
>>106492208
They sucked hot dog shit in 2021. They sucked hot dog shit last year. They'll suck hot dogshit this year, and the next.
The performance isn't up to par and there are still persistent software issues.
>but muh idle battery life! Muh 20hrs web browsing!
No one cares, provably so.
>>
>>106492356
Nobody buys an Apple laptop or tablet for its ISA. They buy it because its from Apple.
>>
>>106492387
what x86 windows laptop has the longest battery life ?
>>
>>106492356
they make their own processors and can enhance backwards compatibility, they also will use it to control deprecation of hardware
>>
>>106492398
The ones not running windows. I can put debian on sleep mode and it'll stay alive for 5 something days.
Windows, on the other hand, has to sell your info even on sleep mode. I recall two times I used windows for a presentation then put the laptop to sleep. By the time I was home (~4 hours), the laptop had zero juice.
>>
>>106492208
>What happened ?
windows happened, kek
>>
>>106492375
They really wanted to be Apple again.
Fuckers need to stop trying for gods sake. Not in general but just stop trying to be Apple.
They were nice because no matter what machine you ran it was just fucking Windows. It looked like Windows, acted like Windows and when you take that away suddenly nobody wants to fucking use it anymore what a surprise

The fuck are you on about? Jetbrains ships aarch64 linux builds of all their products and they work without issue. Same tarball for both the raspberry pi 5 on my desk and my macbook. Renoise is the same. ARMv8-A is like 15 years old.

wrong.
Mac revenue noticeable increased after Apple Silicon was released.

>be school IT
>Sales rep from reseller pushing these things like no tomorrow since esim capable for students who don't have internet(section 8)
>get one, helpdesk confused as shit as apps don't install
>students mad it doesn't play fortnite
>batterylife is meh compared to laptops in current year being long but no one cares as long as it lasts 6 hours
>cost per unit is comparable to an intel/AMD laptop and the video/3D offload is better

Only pro is these can run fine without a fan, but so can the low end intel/amd procs.
>>
>>106492208
Are they emulating x86-64 on ARM with software layer? Or using hardware abstraction with special instructions risc?
>>
>>106492375
This, so much this. Every Pajeet Nepotism Product Manager had some input to fuck up the launch in some way.
>>
>>106492513
Atleast these things are more useful than junk chromebooks lmao
>>
>>106492528
These laptops come with Windows ARM edition, so most all software installs are through the MS store. It's not HORRIBLE but for people not using stock everyday apps or webapps they fucking suck
>>
>>106492546
I'd take a chromebook honestly, I have an i7(with Xe iGPU) Asus one at least it can install Steam and run even GTA V at a decent resolution and framerate; not that I play GTA V but as a benchmark it does well for some light vidya.
>>
>>106492500
Because there was a huge marketing push, you shit eating retards. Normies know literally nothing about either X86 or ARM. ISA is meaningless to the consumer.
>>
>>106492554
GTA V is not light vidya, especially after the recent patches.

Nigga, what? Do you think that every ARM SoC implements a different instruction set or something?
>maintain a gazilon builds.
You can get generic kernels that run on pretty much anything with mainline support. Of course, a lot of SoC manufacturers refuse to upstream their changes, so you have to use their own modded kernel.
>It's the reason why samsung and similar drops support after 3 years on average.
These laptops have proper UEFI and ACPI. At the moment, you can't just boot a generic Linux distro's ISO because Qualcomm can't be bothered to upstream all of their kernel modifications, but eventually, it's going to happen.
>>
>>106492644
Dunno it plays the "legacy" version as good as my 750 Ti did so that's my only metric
>>
>>106492476
>Java software works on both
Well no shit sherlock
>>
>>106492547
i got one, and this is not at all the way it is. windows arm works in exactly the same way as window x86, you can install software from anywhere you want, it's not limited to the store. the only difference is that x86 software is emulated.
>>
average consumer doesn't care about ISAs.
Apple never marketed their new laptops for having le ARM CPUs, it was all just about battery life.
A lot of people who use windows (gamers, engineers, etc) don't care about battery life that much.
>>
>>106492396
No one is buying the decked out Mac Studio because it's from Apple. They're buying it because it's one of the more simple and cost effective ways to run unquantized local models.
>>
>>106492208
There was potential, but that's all there was.
>>
>>106492208
They didn't come with AI compute nodes like Mac M1/2/3 does so there's no point in buying them over a Mac
>>
>>106492356
Because they have a monopoly and can force people to bend the knee and use it.
>>
>>106492353
>You would need to compile a programm for specific devices and maintain a gazilon builds.
x86 programs work just fine on my arm laptop. At least on windows with the translation layer.
>>
are they super cheap now since no one bought them ?
>>
Microsoft Jeets can only cargo cult Apple and slowly destroy the little of what's left of what white men left them.
>why can apple do it
More white people.
>>
>>106492208
Corporate monopolies and planned obsolescence.
>>106492270
People are retarded, like you.
