I found this craptop in an eviction clear out last year. It had windows 10 installed & couldn't get out of its own way. I know fuck-all aboot computers, software & programming. Chan reccomended XFCE. I Watched a few videos and made it happen. Definitely learning curve, but I like it. 5 months ago, the battery failed & bloated.By the Chaos Of Kek, I found one *for free* on Amazon Vine. ordered & installed... it would not charge. Kek provides: there was an option to return & replace the already *FREE* battery. 2nd battery arrived yesterday. I installed it, assuming it also would be junk. it works perfectly! My craptop lives on.what is a proper offering in thanks?
>>106492989Get something that doesn't have the worst TFT screen in existence.
>>106492989Good thread.
>>106493048>I know fuck-all aboot computers, software & programming.I have no idea what that means.and why would I bother or spend anything? My wife has a MacBook Pro 2023 model. I have a Galaxy Note 20 that does 99% of what I need i.e. shitposting on Chan. the only time I use it is when my phone is charging, or I need to track pedigree on Kintracks for our dairy sheep.
>>106492989As an owner of some old Asus netbooks, I gotta say that screen and keyboard are the worst I've seen.Having said that, congratulations on getting it running, anon.Install FreeBSD on it and kek will approve.
Did you install an SSD on it? It'd make it way faster.
>>106493134Just read up on BSD. sounds complicated. it already has an OS. it was a pain in the ass to do it (knowing fuck all) and I see no benefit to starting over. if it ain't broke...>>106493217apparently nothing can be upgraded on this craptop. it's an all-in-one motherboard, logic board... whatever the fuck it is called. and again... FREE PROJECT.
>>106492989The worst laptop I had the misfortune to provide tech support to (my mom).Fortunately she understood it's a piece of junk (it was only $200!) and bought a decent replacement.
>>106493253Stay with Linux. Xfce is fine and lightweight. Most advice you'll read on this board is utterly retarded and inadequate.
In the same eviction unit, I also acquired a Samsung tablet which I now use as a remote for one of TWO Samsung televisions that were also left behind. the smaller 24" *Non-Smart* one had a shite remote that eventually quit altogether. since we don't have cable, I dug up a 13 year old Chromecast that a former customer gave us when he moved away. now it is a fully functional multi-platform streaming TV mounted on a swivel (also from the eviction house) on our bedroom wall. we never use it, but once or twice a year, we'll watch a movie in bed.the other TV from that unit is unreal. they abandoned a 75" Samsung smart TV. it is now our Great Room television.best score in 20 years of property management.

>>106493119You are really stupid friend. Look for these specs:>ips screen at least 1080p (at this point thats all of them)>8gb ram>quad core cpu (at this point all of them also amd is the far better choice- best to stick to the “3” series or higher and this is also true of intels core i3 and above)>16:10 will give you more vertical space if you want that, what you have is 16:9Used thinkpad if you are on a budget, it will also have more durability as it is a business class laptop
>>106492989I remember helping you install linux on this thing. Glad you got it working.
>>106494433Why? I don't *need* anything. I have all the tech shit I want, that I felt was worth spending money on. if Kek sees fit to deliver unto me, manna from the æther, then so it shall be.I work and earn for my needs. Kek provides what he sees fit.
>>106494519Well if you want to upgrade in the near future keep those specs in mind.
>>106492989>Amazon Vinebased retard
>>106494499Much appreciated. my expertise is agricultural, mechanical & construction. I can breed, grow, repair & build almost anything. I walked away from tech in 1997. gave up gaming, "coding" (Basic) and upgrading. traded that out for grinding, farming & building in the physical world. Picrel from original post. December 14, 2024.
You want your shit destroyed & rebuilt better than when Granny & Grandpa built in 1943? I'm your Anon. when I need to buy new electronics, upgrade my system, or install new software... that's where ChAnon comes in.
according to the date printed on the battery, it was manufactured in 2018. or at least that is my interpretation, since the rest of the printing is hidden under a silver sticker that I am not inclined to mess with. after fully charging, it shows 32.1Wh in Power Manager, but claims 37Wh (4960mAh) printed on the battery. Grok says it may improve after a few full charge/discharge cycles, but I doubt it, since it's 7 year old new stock. whatever. it'll rarely leave the charger. although on that note it is my understanding that I do need to cycle it occasionally and should not leave it on the AC power supply 24/7.
taskbar belongs on bottom of screen
nice project op.
BLOAT!
>>106493091This but unironically
>>106496142Any empirical evidence to back that up? Not shitposting BTW.
>>106492989congrats manloonix really is the saving grace for any old techfriend gave me one of those crappy 50 gig hard drive hp laptops, windows 10 wouldn't stop trying to auto update itself even though there literally wasn't room left on the drive. installed debian testing with xfce and she runs like a dream, even the gpu was working out of the boxi love linux
>>106497466I don't remember how I moved it up top, but I vaguely remember seeing it was an option and thinking "perfect!" because it just felt wrong to look to the bottom of the screen.>>106497468I had always been curious aboot Linux. didn't know shit aboot it, except it was different, which interested me. I/we have been Mac since i purchased my first computer as an adult in 2010, so avoiding windows was a plus, I guess.

Fascinatingly bizzare thread.
>>106492989Mr. Jack of all trades OP, how much do you make each month?
>>106494710I had no idea this was a saga going on 9 months. Congrats again.
