what i am to expect from running this on a single drive with compression on root system?

has btrfs gotten better lately?
i just setup grub-brtfs and it works as advertised. snapshots work.

i would run zfs if only if it was better integrated during kernel upgrades.

You will have effectively about 20% more space. I recommend forcing zstd:1 if your storage is fast.

I recommend keeping /boot on its own ext4 partition, makes recovery in the case of failures much easier to deal with.
I've used btrfs for non-essential storage for a long time, its been pretty stable and the compression feature is by far the best thing about it.

Data loss
>has btrfs gotten better lately?
Yes, but it still eats data

For now

has data loss happened to you lately?

how about you?

I've used btrfs for a long time and have run into bugs causing major data loss three times, including one time where the btrfs driver got into such a bad state it would make the system unbootable even though the root drive wasn't btrfs. The btrfs devs were very helpful and were able to recover some of my data once and fixed each of the bugs, but the filesystem is a mess of hacks on a poorly architected base and will always just be a shambling tower of patches. It's a shame Linus is trying to kill bcachefs over his hurt feefees, since that filesystem looks like it's actually competently written and takes reliability seriously.
Anyway you'll probably be fine. Just have backups of anything you care about, which you should have whether you use btrfs or not.

that sucks. never had any problems with plain old ext4 but i'd like to have snapshots.
>>
How come these thirdworlders get data loss from filesystem failure and not hardware failure?
And how is data loss even a problem? You just restore yesterday's backup, stupid.

Not him but I've used it for over a decade without losing anything. And I do have had situations where I had to hack the kernel to unfuck a write-protected filesystem because one drive in a mirror keeled over.
My only gripes are that it's kinda slow and likes to write a lot. But you can work around this.
